Pew Research Center’s Religion departmentseeksto promote a deeper understanding of issues at the intersection of religion and public affairs.We are seeking temporaryContent Analysis/Research Data Codersto support a time-limited research project focused on global religion and public life.

These temporary full-time positionswill run for a12-week period beginning June 16, 2026(with the possibility ofa4-weekextension). Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be able to commit to37.5 hoursper week during regular business hours. Positions are paid at a rate of $18.50per hour.

In this role,Content Analysis/Research DataCoders will research and code informationon effortsto reducereligious hostilitiesaround the worldThe work supports Pew Research Center’seffortstomeasure government restrictions on religion, as well as religious hostilities and violence worldwide.Coders will apply content analysis research methods and review major international sources, including the U.S. State Department’s annual International Religious Freedomreports,country constitutions, governmentwebsitesand news reports.

Primary Responsibilities

Working under direction,Coderswill have the following duties:

Coding & Data Entry

  • ApplyPew Research Center’scodebook tocomb through lengthyreports fromvarioussourcesandcode informationfollowing Pew Research Center'smethodology

  • Discuss research findings and provide input on shaping the coding guidelines andprocess

  • Enter codesandsupportingevidenceinto a database as countries are coded

  • Compare current coding with partnerto spot discrepancies and reconcile differences appropriately in consultation withresearchers

Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Recentgraduate or current student(must havecompleted at least 2 years of college)with aninterest in religion, world affairs,and/or other topics relevant to the study of government restrictions on religion and social hostilitiesinvolving religion

  • Previouscoding(content analysis)experience, qualitativeresearchexperience,orworkin similarresearch projects isan advantage, but notrequired

  • Basic familiarity with Excel isrequired

  • Detail oriented with exacting standards tomaintainaccuracy and impartiality in all work products.

  • Ability to work well in a team setting

  • Ability to take instructions and follow through well

  • Ability to workdiligentlyunder deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate clearly in a remote workenvironment,including documentingcoding notes,questionsand decisions appropriately and clearly.

  • Ability toread throughlengthy reports and code relevant information.

Requirements

This is a full-timetemporarypositionlocatedin Washington, DC.Candidatesmustresidein the following states for the duration ofemployment(DC, MD, VA). Codershave theoptionto work in the office or remotelyandmust be available during established business hours.

FLSA Status:Non-exempt

Salary:$1 8.50per hour

Location:Hybridor Remote
