Job Description

Temporary Consultant Histopathologist required for hospital in the South West.

Purpose of the Role

The appointee will function as a Consultant Histopathologist within the Laboratory Medicine Directorate. The successful candidate will provide high-quality diagnostic histopathology services, participate actively in site-specific Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, support National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) clinical pathways, and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and research.

Key Responsibilities & Clinical Duties

1. Clinical Service Delivery

  • Provide diagnostic reporting on surgical pathology specimens, biopsies, and cytopathology (where applicable) across general and subspecialty areas.

  • Participate actively in site-specific Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings for cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning.

  • Provide expert consultative opinions on complex cases at the request of clinical colleagues.

  • Provide an autopsy service in line with regional hospital requirements.

  • Ensure rapid turn-around times and quality standards in compliance with ISO 15189 accreditation requirements and INAB guidelines

2. Management & Service Development

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Lead, Laboratory Manager, and Senior Medical Scientists to optimize laboratory workflow, quality assurance, and digital pathology integration.

  • Participate in clinical governance, risk management, clinical audit, and continuous quality improvement projects within the department.

3. Education, Training & Research

  • Supervise and mentor Specialist Registrars (SpRs), Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs), and trainee Medical Scientists.

  • Participate in undergraduate medical teaching in conjunction with the University of Limerick School of Medicine.

  • Engaged in clinical research, clinical trials, and academic publications supported by the Clinical Education & Research Centre (CERC).

Requirements

Professional Qualifications

  • Specialist Registration: Full registration in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Histopathology (or eligibility for immediate registration at the time of appointment).

Experience & Competencies

  • Possession of FRCPath (or equivalent recognized higher qualification in Pathology).

  • Demonstrated high-level expertise in general diagnostic surgical pathology and subspecialty reporting.

  • Strong track record of active participation in clinical audit, clinical governance, and multidisciplinary team working.

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.

  • Proficient in clinical teaching, NCHD supervision, and educational delivery.
