Human Resources announces an opening for an Hourly ESL Instructor with the REEP Program at Arlington Public Schools. The

Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP) of Arlington Public Schools is a dynamic, multi-faceted English as a Second

Language (ESL) program for adult English language learners who live or work in Arlington, Virginia.

Hours: Evening class, 10 hours per week for 12 weeks (plus 3 hours per week paid planning)

Arlington Mill Community Center: Monday-Thursday, 6:30-8:45 pm

Syphax Education Center: Monday-Thursday evening, 6:45-9:00 pm

For 50 years, our mission at REEP has been to provide for the education and employment related needs of adults learning English in Arlington County. The REEP program and curriculum prepare adult students with the language, life, and digital literacy skills necessary to flourish as Northern Virginia residents and employees. REEP learners come from countries around the world, and they work across our community in a myriad of jobs.

Instructors are expected to carry out the program’s mission by course planning, preparing daily lesson plans, and curating/designing materials. Lesson plans will meet the needs of all learners and directly align with the approach and objectives of the REEP Curriculum.

Job Responsibilities

Instructional Following the REEP Curriculum

• conduct needs assessments to determine learner needs and create a course plan - assess student levels using REEP Level Descriptors
• establish classroom rules for behavior and enforce school division policies and procedures
• prepare daily lesson plans that:
• Establish clear language and digital resilience objectives
• Are level-appropriate and learner focused
• Provide whole class, small group, partner, and individual instruction
• Lead to high-quality and substantive group participation with real life application
• Integrate classroom instructional technology, including mobile computer lab
• Evaluate student progress through regular formative and summative assessments
• Make and communicate informed promotion/retention decisions at the end of each cycle

Administrative

• Meet with students individually at mid-cycle to communicate progress
• Meet with students individually at the end of each cycle to communicate promotion/retention decisions
• Attend required beginning of cycle, mid-cycle and end of cycle teacher meetings
• Utilize required school technology including Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, the Google Workspace, interactive boards, and other applications
• Register, assess, and assist in placement of learners into appropriate classes according to REEP procedures

Professional Development

• Annually, in coordination with site coordinator, identify and implement instructional goals
• Participate in required instructional staff development opportunities
• Collaborate with REEP coordinators, instructors, and lab assistants to meet program goals

Requirements for Applicants

• Bachelor’s degree (education, linguistics, or a related field)
• Experience teaching ESL to adult immigrants and refugees at a variety of levels
• Experience and openness to integrating digital literacy and technology into instruction
• Openness and commitment to work within the program’s approach to instruction
• Ability and commitment to arrive each day prepared for class and ready to start on time
• Ability and commitment to complete a full cycle with minimal disruption to student learning

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate degree in TESL or related field
• TEFL/TESOL certificate or work toward certification
• Experience delivering virtual instruction

Employment Conditions and Benefits:

• All new to REEP intensive instructors start at $27.67, hourly
• Paid planning time (30% of class time)
• Paid professional development opportunities at individual teacher rate
• Annual salary step increases, if eligible (total hourly pay, up to $42.39, hourly)
