*Starting pay at $20 an hour*
This position is responsible for greeting and serving customers, conducting the paying and receiving of transactions for customers, cross-selling bank services and performing other related duties and responsibilities. *This position will float between our Harrisonburg, Bridgewater, and Elkton branches.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
- Stay current, maintain superior knowledge and comply with all Farmers & Merchants products and services, policies and procedures.
- Strive at all times to provide superior customer service. Focus on the customer by smiling, calling the customer by name and thanking them as they leave. Provide the same level of customer service to telephone inquiries. Resolve concerns in an efficient and courteous manner. “Own the problem.”
- Develop and maintain the necessary knowledge to identify customer needs in order to promote and sell Farmers & Merchants products and services to potential and existing customers in person, by telephone or by mail. Apply necessary selling and cross-selling skills to the products and services offered by the Bank so as to produce new business and increase Bank revenue. Make referrals to other product areas (investment, mortgage, etc.) and document on referral track. Achieve individual referral goals.
- Responsible for all cash and negotiable instruments received in the course of daily work, recognizing customer needs and suggesting services.
- Receive checks and cash for deposit, verifies amount, and examines checks for endorsements. Process all transactions in accordance with Bank policies.
- Adhere at all times to check cashing policy and pay out money after verification of signatures and customer balances.
- Process work through the teller capture system in a neat and orderly manner with proper encoding.
- Maintain proper amount of currency and coin in cash drawer. Order daily supply of cash and counts incoming cash.
- Balance cash drawer daily within bank guidelines.
- Maintain regular, reliable attendance.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in answering incoming telephone calls for the branch always being prompt and courteous providing quality customer service. Transfer calls promptly, take and deliver messages.
- Balance the automated teller machine (ATM) weekly according to the rotation schedule. Maintain adequate cash in the ATM, answer customer questions and services ATM equipment when possible.
- Assist in night depository opening and processing of transactions.
- Assist in safe deposit box customer access and closing of safe deposit boxes as needed adhering to current Bank policy and procedures.
- Be familiar with branch opening and closing procedures. Understand role in case of robbery, whether victim or bystander, and know proper post-robbery procedures.
- Maintain neat and orderly work area and ensure that all negotiable and confidential records are properly secured.
- Display at all times a positive cooperative spirit, professionalism and a responsible attitude to staff and customers. “Lead by example while being a team player.”
- Represent Farmers & Merchants Bank professionally and courteously while in contact with the public either in person or by telephone. Community involvement encouraged.
- Protect the bank and customer information; knowledge of customers and their relationship with the Bank must be kept in absolute confidence.
- Perform other duties as assigned based on the bank/branch needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent or a minimum of 12 months’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Good comprehension and communication skills.
- Prior customer service and cash handling experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to operate and routinely maintain standard office machines, including coin counter, currency counter, and branch capture equipment.
- Ability to count large amounts of cash (currency and coin) accurately.
- Must have proficient keyboarding skills to be able to operate a calculator and computer.
- Ability to answer telephones and greet the public in a friendly and courteous manner.
- Must have the ability to deal effectively and tactfully with all types of customers.
- Ability to speak in a clear and understandable manner and write legibly.
- Ability to multitask and work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions
- Position demands a person with an outgoing and pleasant personality with an above average knowledge of fundamental arithmetic.
MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This job requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds which may be in the form of bags of coin or computer paper.
- Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Requires sufficient finger dexterity to count and distribute currency.
- Must be able to concentrate for extended periods of time, paying attention to detail.
