Role Overview

The Communications & Infrastructure Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of the site's communications infrastructure, with a primary focus on radio systems, communication towers, fiber optic networks, and mission-critical communication services that support safe and efficient mining operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot two-way radio systems, including Motorola, Kenwood, Tait, and other land mobile radio (LMR) platforms.
  • Perform programming, testing, commissioning, and repairs of portable, mobile, and fixed radio equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and fault diagnosis on radio repeaters, base stations, and tower-mounted communications equipment.
  • Install, terminate, splice, test, certify, and troubleshoot fiber optic cabling and associated network infrastructure.
  • Perform OTDR testing, fiber fault location, and documentation of fiber plant assets.
  • Maintain site-wide communications networks supporting mine operations, dispatch systems, emergency communications, and remote monitoring systems.
  • Support LTE/Private LTE and industrial Wi-Fi infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity across surface and underground operations.
  • Assist with the deployment and maintenance of dispatch, fleet management, and telemetry communication systems.
  • Coordinate and oversee telecommunication system work performed by contractors, vendors, and service providers.
  • Maintain accurate records, drawings, network diagrams, frequency licensing documentation, and communication asset inventories.
  • Monitor the health and performance of telecommunications infrastructure and proactively respond to service interruptions.
  • Support UPS systems, backup power equipment, and environmental monitoring systems associated with telecommunication facilities and repeater sites.
  • Assist with network troubleshooting and connectivity issues related to fiber, radio and communications towers.
  • Inspect, maintain, and support communication towers, antenna systems, transmission lines, grounding systems, shelters, and repeater sites.
  • Support and maintain microwave communication systems and wireless backhaul networks connecting remote mine infrastructure.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, manufacturer standards, and company procedures related to communications infrastructure.
  • Participate in communications infrastructure projects including tower upgrades, fiber expansions, radio network improvements, and technology deployments.
  • Respond to emergency communications outages and provide after-hours support as required.
  • Design, plan, and implement site-wide radio communications infrastructure, including coverage analysis, repeater placement, antenna systems, tower requirements, and wireless backhaul solutions to support surface and underground mining operations.
  • Design and maintain fiber optic network infrastructure, including backbone architecture, fiber routing, splice enclosures, patch panels, distribution networks, and communications pathways to ensure reliable and scalable connectivity across the operation.
  • Develop communications infrastructure standards, drawings, and documentation for radio, fiber optic, tower, and network deployments, ensuring alignment with operational requirements and industry best practices.
  • Evaluate existing communications systems and recommend improvements to optimize radio systems coverage, as well as availability.
  • Participate in the design, commissioning, and expansion of communications projects including repeater sites, communication towers, microwave links, fiber optic backbone networks, LTE/Private LTE systems, and industrial wireless infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with operational stakeholders, engineering teams, and contractors to design communications solutions that support mine development, production, safety systems, and future technology initiatives.
  • Produce and maintain communications infrastructure documentation including network diagrams, fiber schematics, radio system layouts, frequency plans, tower drawings, and asset records.
  • Conduct site surveys and communications assessments to determine infrastructure requirements, identify coverage gaps, and support the design of reliable communications systems for new and existing mining areas.
  • Adhere to all safety requirements when working at heights, in confined spaces, around energized equipment, and in active mining environments.

What You Bring to the Table

  • College or degree in a related field plus related certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • Effective ability to convey messages in an organized, clear and succinct way.
  • Strong technical knowledge radio systems, communication towers, fiber optic networks, and mission-critical communication services
  • Strong technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards
  • The individual should have demonstrated a high level of energy, self-motivation and strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills together with an ability to facilitate commitment to a cooperative team effort.
  • Good communication skills, both orally and written with both internal and external contacts and the ability to work with all levels of the organization.

Salary range: $80,600- $128,750 CAD

The expected salary range for this role is intended to support transparency and informed decision making. Final compensation will be based on skills, experience and internal equity.
