Position Summary:

Answers and directs calls coming in on main lines, to provide information to callers regarding programs and services and to page staff using the intercom and beepers.

Examples of duties

Education/Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) months of experience in the operation of a switchboard/telecommunications system.

Qualifications

  • One (1) year of recent documented PBX Operator experience and/or high call volume phone management in a hospital setting.
  • Experience working with inter-disciplinary departments in a hospital setting.
  • RECENT DOCUMENTED experience (within the last 5 years) using paging systems, radios or beepers; answering the hearing-impaired line.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with work schedule changes.

Supplemental information

Knowledge of:

Procedures and techniques for using telecommunication systems; techniques for dealing with the public; office practices and procedures; department and hospital safety policies and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

Skill in:

Applying customer service techniques; taking and relaying messages; listening and determining needs of customers; dealing with irate and hostile customers while remaining patient, tactful and diplomatic; projecting a professional and positive image of UMC; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; maintaining records and files; understanding and following oral and written instructions; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work is subject to shift assignments.
