The Telecommunications Planning group assesses the adequacy of the Telecom network to identify robust solutions to provide safe, reliable, and affordable service to meet our customer’s needs now and in the future. Telecom Planners are responsible for performing analysis and developing projects to address criteria violations on the AEP Telecom network, including the fiber cable infrastructure and Telecom Transport architecture. They lead, participate in, and support various activities to ensure adherence to internal and external processes. The Telecom strategy will leverage the Telecom needs for all business units. These efforts will provide a more robust and resilient Telecom network to advance our visibility of the power grid, meet our rapidly growing data and bandwidth needs, and support various future technologies. The execution of this strategy will involve all Telecom Engineering teams along with multiple teams within Transmission, Distribution, and Generation.
Planners are expected to provide written and verbal reports, write and define processes and methodology changes, and make presentations to AEP management. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required for this position.

What you’ll do:

This role will focus primarily on the general team responsibilities related to the gathering of network requirements to develop conceptual scopes to support the strategic five (5) year telecom investment plan for an assigned geographic area. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Gather network requirements from all BU’s while incorporating Telecom standards for strategic planning in assigned area.
  • Utilize Telecom planning criteria to evaluate assigned area and identify solutions to address any bandwidth, redundancy or resiliency deficiencies and establish projects to correct these areas.
  • Attending various meetings and delivering presentations as necessary for example:
  • Conduct pre-engagement meetings to ensure that all projects that are moved forward have been effectively vetted and are viable.
  • Present at engagement meetings conceptual scopes and gain approval to move projects forward with the scoping teams.
  • Participate in Transmission and Distribution pre-engagement and development meetings as required.
  • Ongoing collaboration with peers within Transmission and Distribution planning to ensure project and strategic alignment.
  • Ongoing collaboration with all business units to ensure project and strategic alignment.
  • Maintain the Telecom planning map in area of responsibility.
  • Maintain the detailed list of Telecom capital projects in area of responsibility.
  • Ongoing collaboration with all Telecom planners to ensure area projects support an overall unified network.
  • Awareness of all Telecom project work in area of responsibility.
  • A project record will be created to provide visibility to the current and upcoming Telecom work plan. An Overview Scope document will be created for all projects and used to facilitate required hand-offs of Planning’s conceptual scopes.
    • Follow standard workflow for engineering projects; apply economic analysis techniques and adhere to budgeting and approval processes in project development.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of AEP networks, components, and facilities to enable more efficient and comprehensive responses to projects and problems.
    • Learn AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of one's organizational unit.
    • Assess telecommunications drawings to determine availability of existing infrastructure; facilitate reviews with various Engineering groups.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, computer science, telecommunications, or related field of study
  • Or associate’s degree in field mentioned above with 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Or HS diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant work experience required.

Experience:

  • No additional experience, other than what is listed above, is required.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License is Required.

Telecommunications Consultant SG7

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, computer science, telecommunications, or related field of study
  • Or associate’s degree in field mentioned above with 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Or HS diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant work experience required.

Experience:

  • 2 years of relevant work experience in addition to any experience mentioned above.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License is Required.

In addition:

  • Occasional travel required. less than 10%
  • GIS systems (ArcGIS/ArcMap), Google Earth Pro, MS Office Suite, Visio
  • Fiber optic cable routing diagrams and drawings
  • Knowledge of Telecommunications structures and attachments
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and execute multiple requests and tasks with varying priorities
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to review Telecom contracts
