Telecommunications Assistant

Hours: 11p-7a

Location: 5255 Loughboro Road, NW Washington, DC 20016

Pay rate: $22 per hour

Responsibilities

Serves as a customer service ambassador to all Sibley stakeholders (staff, MD, patients and families) through demonstration of excellent customer service skills as outlined in Sibley’s Circle of Excellence.

Support the daily operations and activity flow of the patient care area by performing administrative functions and acting as a central source of information for staff, physicians, patients, families and other departments. Consistently demonstrates strong organizational, communication and time management skills that help to facilitate a smooth functioning across the facility by operating all communications/answering service equipment.

  • Operate an electronic message center, sitting at a PC and keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Answers and receives all incoming calls, referring callers to proper extension by reading a listing of telephone numbers.
  • Establish a productive rapport with families and visitors; initiates contact and determines customers’ needs upon arrival to the unit.

  • Direct patient/family and physicians concerns to the appropriate person.
  • Provide routing information to callers as requested and in accordance with hospital policy by listening to the request.
  • Assist and maintain accurate lists for in-house in Medicall by writing or typing the information which is then given to the supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate list of on-call personnel by updating the on-call listing in writing. Contact the on-call personnel during off hours.
  • Visually and audibly monitors alarms such as CODE BLUE, CODE ORANGE, CODE PINK, CODE PURPLE, CODE STRONG, CODE RED, CODE 100, RAPID RESPONSE TEAM, CODE STORK, STROKE RESPONSE TEAM, CODE SILVER, and STAT PAGE (OB, Anesthesia, etc) and adheres to hospital and department policies and procedures relative to them. Monitoring also involves reaching above head level to turn alarms off.
  • Pages authorized personnel by speaking over the hospital “Public Address” system.
  • Answer the physicians’ answering service calls and establishes reliable typed messages then transmits messages to clients by telephone, cell phone, or pager.
  • Contact Imaging techs (i.e. ECHO, MRI, Vascular, NUC Med, etc).
  • Maintain accurate and clear typed and written records of all transactions in hospital EHR.
  • Maintain the utmost confidentiality as it pertains to clients (patients, visitors, and staff) and physicians’ answering service functions.
  • Verbally notifies Telecommunications Technician or Telephone Company of needed repairs after speaking with telephone system users.
  • Assistance with language equipment and remote controls.
  • Maintain language cart
  • Attend meetings as required.

Qualifications

High School graduate preferred or equivalent training and experience.

One year of experience as a hospital and /or answering service operator preferred.

  • Must be able to speak clearly distinctly and use good grammar.
  • Must be able to type 30 words per minute.
  • Displays good judgment and diplomacy in dealing with all clients.
  • Must be able to express oneself clearly verbally and in writing.
  • Provide excellence customer service to all stakeholders
