Job Summary

The Telecom Fiber Specialist A performs advanced to expert installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of AEP fiber optic systems and related equipment. Work may be performed independently or under varying levels of supervision and includes outside plant fiber work and connecting broadband services to AEP infrastructure.

This role requires work on or near electrical transmission and distribution systems using bucket trucks, ladders, and climbing structures. Strict adherence to AEP safety standards, including PPE and Minimum Approach Distance (MAD), is required.

Employees are expected to demonstrate expert-level technical knowledge, independently resolve complex issues, and lead, coordinate, and support the development of other team members.

What you’ll do:

Essential Job Functions & Tasks

  • Perform advanced to expert installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of overhead and underground fiber optic systems
  • Lead complex troubleshooting, testing, and system diagnostics
  • Operate bucket trucks, aerial devices, and service vehicles
  • Perform complex fiber splicing, testing, and connectivity work
  • Lead and coordinate work activities; provide technical guidance and training to team members
  • Inspect, maintain, and ensure safe use of tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and system documentation
  • Follow and reinforce all AEP safety policies and procedures

What we’re looking for:

Must have completed Telecommunications Fiber Specialist‑B requirements (or equivalent) and demonstrate:

  • Work within the electrical supply space on AEP’s distribution poles
  • Advanced to expert proficiency operating aerial lifts and related equipment
  • Expert-level troubleshooting and fault resolution skills
  • Strong knowledge of rigging, line work, and equipment handling
  • Proper use and inspection of protective equipment (gloves, sleeves, blankets, etc.)
  • Ability to lead emergency and rescue procedures

Advanced to expert knowledge of:

  • Fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and maintenance
  • Broadband systems and telecom infrastructure (where applicable)
  • AC/DC power systems and electrical environments

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical degree or telecom experience preferred
  • Must have successfully performed duties of Telecommunications Fiber Specialist‑B (or equivalent)
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Valid Class A CDL required

Additional Requirements

  • Strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and professionalism
  • Advanced telecommunications/electronics aptitude
  • Ability to travel, work overtime, and operate company vehicles (including off‑road)
  • Ability to progress within the job classification structure (“up or out”)
  • Must pass a physical abilities assessment
  • Capable of directing and overseeing work of less experienced employees

Physical Requirements

  • Physical Demand: Heavy
  • Perform physically demanding work similar to Fiber Specialist‑B / Line Mechanic roles
  • Operate heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Climb poles, use ladders, and work at heights
  • Lift and carry tools and equipment up to 60 lbs
  • Work outdoors in varying conditions on overhead and underground systems

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
