The Associated Press seeks an energetic and aggressive reporter to join its team covering technology, with a focus on digital culture and trends and how they’re shaping our lives and decisions. You will identify and report on newsworthy internet trends, online communities and personalities, and evolving digital landscapes. You will cover topics like influencer culture, digital harassment and online discourse. This temporary staff position lasts through January 31, 2027 and is covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
Responsibilities: Based in New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin or Boston, you will help keep AP on top of the fast-evolving world of social media and internet culture. You will deliver scoops and exclusives, craft features, and respond swiftly to breaking news events. A deep understanding of the internet and social media platforms is essential, along with the ability to work sensitively with sources. This role requires a commitment to covering potentially challenging stories that resonate with a wide audience.
Reporting to the technology news editor, you will juggle daily interviews and source-building with both spot news assignments and longer-term features, all while producing copy that is accurate and explains complex issues in clear and inviting ways. You consistently will generate ideas for insightful, impactful stories to pursue either alone or in collaboration with colleagues across regions, teams and formats. You will seek out opportunities to break news or report news that is exclusive to AP, giving priority to work that is likely to be of most interest to AP’s audience. Teamwork, curiosity and communicating for planning purposes are essential. You should be enthusiastic about storytelling that works in digital formats, willing to experiment with new approaches and tools, and helpful in arranging compelling visuals to accompany their text.
Required Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: We're looking for someone with at least two years of full-time experience in journalism who will consistently deliver high-impact stories that appeal to AP’s global audience. You should be an idea machine, able to think creatively and critically, and eager to build topic expertise, a wide range of sources and reliable data sets. It is essential that you can communicate clearly, concisely and conversationally and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines. You should have strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats. Experience covering the tech industry or social media is a plus.

his position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $53,477 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience. Additional compensation is negotiable based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
