Job Description

Technology Developer – Battery Material Development & Electrochemistry (m/f/d)

  • Location: Hamburg, Norderstedt - tesa Headquarter
  • Entry as: Permanent
  • Work Area: Research and Development

What you will do

As a Technology Developer – Battery Material Development & Electrochemistry, you will develop and apply electrochemical and complementary testing methods to evaluate battery components, advanced materials, and adhesive solutions.

Working at the interface of electrochemistry, materials science, and technology development, you will generate insights that support material validation, prototyping, and the development of innovative adhesive solutions for future battery applications. You will also contribute to building tesa's internal testing capabilities and laboratory infrastructure.

Your tasks include:

  • Design and execute test campaigns for battery components, advanced materials, and adhesive solutions, with a focus on electrochemical characterization.
  • Perform electrochemical testing using coin cells, three-electrode setups, and advanced diagnostic methods.
  • Conduct battery teardowns, failure analysis, and post-mortem investigations to identify degradation mechanisms and root causes.
  • Perform complementary mechanical, physical, and morphological testing to enable holistic material evaluation.
  • Analyze experimental data and translate findings into actionable recommendations for technology, product development, and prototyping teams.
  • Support hands-on prototyping, laboratory validation, and pilot runs in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Establish and continuously improve internal electrochemical testing methods and capabilities.
  • Lead or support laboratory investment projects, including equipment selection, procurement, installation, and commissioning.
  • Build internal know-how in the electrochemical evaluation of advanced materials and adhesive solutions for next-generation battery systems.

What you will need

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a comparable discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience in battery R&D, electrochemical testing, or advanced material development, ideally in an industrial environment.
  • Experience in a battery cell or system manufacturer, OEM/OES, battery material supplier, or comparable technology-focused organization is highly desirable.
  • Strong hands-on experience with electrochemical testing, particularly coin cells and three-electrode setups, as well as techniques such as galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, or EIS.
  • Experience with battery teardown, failure analysis, post-mortem investigation, and root cause analysis is an advantage.
  • Broad experimental skills, ideally including mechanical, physical, morphological, thermal, or surface characterization.
  • Experience with adhesives, functional films, coatings, separators, current collectors, or other battery-related materials is highly desirable.
  • Experience establishing laboratory methods, introducing testing equipment, or supporting laboratory investment projects is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to structure, document, and communicate experimental results clearly.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to collaborate effectively across interdisciplinary and international teams; German language skills are an advantage.
