Job Description

Working with the Pathology Clinical Manager and the Technologist II, the Technologist I - Histopathology and Morgue (Anatomical Pathology) assists in the validation of all equipment and processes within the laboratory, preparation of policies and procedures in accordance with CAP and JCI, and training of staff in specific techniques, as appropriate to the expertise and experience of the post-holder. The Technologist I - Histopathology and Morgue (Anatomical Pathology) performs a broad range of technical and analytical work with a high level of individual skill and judgment, under minimal supervision. The post holder is required to observe and maintain a high standard of laboratory health, safety and risk procedures; and works to departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and current professional standards. The Technologist I is actively involved in the laboratories CPD program, preparing and delivering presentations to a range of staff, attending internal and external lectures, and undertaking additional training courses as required. The Technologist I – Histopathology and Morgue (Anatomical Pathology) is part of a team of Biomedical Scientists/Technologists delivering high quality services in their specialty.

  • Performs a wide range of standard and complex technical roles within the section, to include both Anatomical Pathology (Histopathology) and Mortuary (Autopsy Room) methodologies.
  • Analyses and performs small biopsy grossing, embedding, microtomy and cryotomy, H&E staining, Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry and in situ Hybridization and other technologies as applicable.
  • Evaluates and interprets results obtained from the above and prepares work for verification by senior staff.
  • Liaises with Technologist II and Pathology Clinical Manager - Anatomical Pathology, Morgue on appropriateness of tests, results and additional testing as required.
  • Monitors, records and reports back results, participating in discussion to rectify areas of concern if necessary.
  • Maintains co-operation between the sections and between disciplines by regular communication with other Technologist I grade and senior staff.
  • Responsible for ensuring adequate stocks of reagents and consumables are available within their designated area, for the efficient running of the service.
  • In liaison with the Technologist II and the Laboratory Manager, provides technical advice on, and assists in the selection / validation of new equipment.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and safe use of equipment within the section.
  • Helps to ensure the provision of a high quality, cost-effective service with the emphasis on quality assurance in all aspects of the section supervised by monitoring and audit of internal quality control.
  • Uses LIS to generate workload statistics and run queries.Assesses quality of data according to defined criteria.
  • Is actively involved in the external quality assurance schemes that the department subscribes to.
  • Performs corrective action as advised when the quality control procedures fail.
  • Works as part of a team to ensure achievement and maintenance of CAP, JCI and MoPH standards in the section.
  • Ensures policies and procedures for the sections are adhered to.
  • Performs training (theoretical and practical) of technical staff and students in methodologies, principles and procedures by way of tutorials, presentations and seminars.
  • Participates in the implementation of new methodologies under the direction of the Technologist II and Laboratory Manager.
  • Participates in research and development as directed by the Technologist II and the Laboratory Manager.
  • Undertakes training, and achieves competency in technical procedures from other disciplines to ensure appropriate cross-sectional cover can be maintained throughout the department.
  • Complies with all laboratory health and safety procedures and policies including the cultural and health and safety issues with regards to working in the mortuary.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL

Education

Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Biomedical Science, BMedLabSc, BMLSc or other relevant program

Experience

  • 2+ years’ experience in a diagnostic Anatomical Pathology Laboratory (Diagnostic Histopathology)
  • Experience / understanding of LIS operations
  • Experience in validation of newequipment and services

Certification and Licensure

  • License in the country of origin or country of practice
  • Meets licensing requirements of the State of Qatar
  • Candidates must be successful in the Prometrics exam – Technologist - in country of origin prior to submission of resignation and issue of Visa

Job Specific Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge / understanding of CAP/JCI standards and guidelines

  • Competent in a broad range of Anatomical Pathology / Histopathology techniques

  • Thorough practical knowledge of Anatomical Pathology / Histopathology techniques

  • Experience in small biopsy grossing, embedding, microtomy and cryotomy, H&E staining, Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry and in situ Hybridization

  • Thorough familiarity with tissue processors, microtomes, staining automated instruments and other essential laboratory equipment

  • Ability to work as part of team, but also independently with minimal supervision
