Responsible for performing intermediate level technical work and related activities associated with the planning, engineering, design, analysis, research, development, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of Company equipment and facilities.
Technician
What You’ll Do:
Technical Proficiency: Uses knowledge and experience to perform cost effective work in an efficient manner. Exhibits understanding of pertinent equipment, material, systems, and processes. Possesses intermediate level of computer literacy knowledge/skills.
Leadership & Guidance: Understands and works within appropriate policies and follows procedures. Provides training and guidance to employees where beneficial.
Planning & Organization Ability: Develops knowledge of time constraints for work activities and makes proper adjustments where needed.
Problem Solving & Initiative: Actively seeks out information to increase technical knowledge and job skills where beneficial to AEP.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Contributes to team goals. Begins networking with peers to share information and encourage cooperation. Develops a Win-Win relationship. Understands corporate goals.
Decision Making & Business Awareness: Uses decision making skills to perform job more efficient and cost effective. Demonstrates an attitude, ability, and desire to listen and satisfy both internal and external customers. Refer to attached matrix for required qualifications.
What You’ll Need:
Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Civil/ Mechanical Engineering Technology or related fields plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of related utility industry work experience.

Physical Demands -Varies by location or territory. In some locations or territories, technician must be able to:
1.Walk right ways of various terrain in adverse conditions to patrol distribution power lines to determine damage.
2.Carry and handle telescopic measuring sticks and switching sticks that weigh 11 pounds.
3.May be required to use a brush axe (approx. 6 pounds) or machete (approx. 2 pounds) to clear brush for walking and staking in survey work.
Technician Senior
What You’ll Do:
Technical Proficiency: Demonstrates the ability to understand and perform technical functions required in relevant area of assignment. Demonstrates a strong ability to use technical and computer tools to perform assignments in most cost-effective method possible. Ensures compliance with standards, codes, regulations, practices, and procedures in area of assignment.
Leadership & Guidance: Develops and may assist in the delivery of training to other employees and sections on employee's area of expertise. May assist in leading the work activities within work group, team, department or other corporate entity as necessary to perform all routine engineering technical assignments. Planning & Organization Ability: Prepares cost estimates for non-routine work, i.e. special projects. Uses records to plan future work.
Plans, organizes and conducts meetings. May plan work and suggests work plans of others to complete non-routine work within time constraints. May coordinate work with suppliers and internal or external customers. Reviews trends of material and equipment performance and initiate necessary corrective action.
Problem Solving & Initiative: Demonstrates the ability to work beyond routine assignments on moderate to complex issues. Seeks to broaden knowledge in areas of the company and industry which will complement acquired technical skills.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Leads and facilitates meetings effectively. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP System. Identifies key stakeholders. Uses informal network to get things done. Develops and presents technical reports clearly, concisely and effectively
Decision Making & Business Awareness: Uses diverse approaches to make decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist. Makes decisions that may affect the operations or results of the section and which may impact the business unit.
Demonstrates the ability to handle conflicting interests related to projects or special tasks. Also demonstrates the ability to analyze options and risks. Planning & Organization Ability: Reviews the planned work of others, as assigned. Organizes and leads special projects and task forces as assigned. Provides leadership role as assigned to special task force efforts and studies working in team-oriented groups across AEP.
Problem Solving & Initiative: Demonstrates superior problem-solving skills in area of specialization. Demonstrates advanced abilities and aptitude for creativity and innovation while encouraging and developing upon the innovation of others.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Projects credibility and competence on technical issues and has highly developed presentation skills. Promotes and endeavors to create a work environment where everyone understands and benefits from the value of unique and combined skills and knowledge of each team member.
Decision Making & Business Awareness: Makes technical decisions based on calculated risks with little or no management review. The Physical Demand Level for this job is: L – Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 12 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5-6 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work.
