Role Purpose

Serves as technical expert in specialty area to support internal customers. Tests and analyzes samples to determine unique properties or for meeting customer specifications. Compiles and analyzes data

Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical prototypes in partnership with scientists and engineers, applying core engineering principles
  • Create, update, and release mechanical CAD models and drawings to support builds, test setups, and documentation
  • Build, assemble, and modify prototype hardware, fixtures, and test apparatuses to support experimental execution
  • Construct, test, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment, components, devices, and mechanical systems
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including optics, electronics, materials, and manufacturing to support system-level builds and test execution
  • Document technical work, communicate results to stakeholders, and contribute to intellectual property disclosures as appropriate

Travel requirements/Work Hours

  • Minimal travel
  • 8AM - 5PM

Experiences/Education - Required

  • 2 year (AAS) technical degree from an accredited institution is required.

Required Skills

  • Ability to create and update mechanical CAD models and drawings (SolidWorks or similar) with good configuration and documentation discipline
  • Experience constructing, testing, and maintaining lab/prototype equipment and mechanical/measurement systems
  • Problem-solving skills, including practical root-cause analysis and implementing corrective actions
  • Ability to plan and execute experimental work, collect accurate measurements, and maintain high data quality and traceability
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills when working with scientists, engineers, and technicians across disciplines
  • Strong safety mindset and consistent adherence to safe work practices in lab, shop, and test environments
  • Ability to work with limited supervision on routine work and determine methods/procedures for new assignments with general direction

Desired Skills

  • Proficiency with specific CAD toolsets (e.g., SolidWorks)
  • Experience with metrology and measurement systems (e.g., optical metrology, profilometry, laser alignment, ultrasonic inspection)
  • Experience with hand tools and power tools for constructing and modifying lab fixtures, additive manufacturing using filament and resin printers
  • Experience supporting opto-mechanical test setups and assembly benches
  • Experience with developing and troubleshooting processes where mechanical design solutions are implemented, including photonic/optical component assembly processes
  • Experience writing or contributing to technical reports, reference documents, and/or invention disclosures/patents
