Maintenance Shop Manager
We are seeking an experienced Technician-In-Charge (TIC) to oversee the daily operations of our fleet maintenance facility. This role is responsible for supervising maintenance staff, managing preventative maintenance and repair schedules, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, and maintaining the reliability of our school bus fleet.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong diesel mechanical expertise, experience managing technicians, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and supervise daily maintenance shop operations and personnel.
• Schedule and oversee preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs for school buses and company vehicles.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues on diesel-powered equipment.
• Review repair orders and ensure work is completed accurately and efficiently.
• Monitor employee performance, provide coaching, and support staff development.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA standards, DOT regulations, and all applicable federal and state requirements.
• Coordinate vehicle availability with dispatch and operations teams.
• Assist with budgeting and provide maintenance updates to management.
• Order parts, fuel, supplies, and coordinate outside repair services as needed.
• Perform hands-on maintenance and repair work when necessary.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
Qualifications
Required
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and transportation equipment.
• Minimum of 3 years of mechanical experience or completion of a technical/trade school program with relevant certifications.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work flexible and early morning hours as needed.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe and professional work environment.
Preferred
• Technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics or a related field.
• Preventative Maintenance, Brake Certification, ASE, or similar industry certifications.
• Previous maintenance management or supervisory experience.
• Experience maintaining school buses or commercial fleet vehicles.
Technical Skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and fleet maintenance software (Manager+ or similar).
• Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
• Ability to learn new systems and technology quickly.
License Requirements
• Must possess or be able to obtain a CDL Class B License with Passenger (P) Endorsement within 60 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds regularly.
• Ability to push or pull up to 120 pounds in emergency situations.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and work underneath vehicles.
• Ability to work in shop, yard, office, and outdoor environments.
• Must successfully complete a DOT physical, dexterity test, and drug screening.
