We are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic individual to join our Automotive team within the Faculty of Creative & Culinary Arts, Animal Science, Automotive and Technology.
Our Automotive provision offers a broad curriculum from Entry Level to Level 3, including full-time study programmes, school link provision and apprenticeships. The department is committed to providing an outstanding learning experience, with learners benefiting from a strong tutorial programme, enrichment opportunities and the chance to showcase their skills through College and external events.
As an Automotive Technician, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality practical learning. Working closely with teaching staff, you will ensure that workshops, vehicles, tools and equipment are maintained and prepared to a high standard, providing a safe, well-organised and industry-relevant learning environment for our learners.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to health and safety, excellent organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a busy curriculum team. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of learners and support the delivery of an ambitious and engaging automotive curriculum.
Key Responsibilities
The Technician will be expected to:
- provide technical assistance and support for teaching and learning within your area, responding to the needs of students, academic staff and the relevant course leader/s;
- maintain a clean and safe working environment within automotive workshops, complying with Health and Safety regulations;
- prepare, maintain and update relevant Health & Safety documentation such as Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, COSHH records and equipment maintenance records, in liaison with course teams;
- maintain, upgrade and service equipment and vehicles including rebuilding and repair, as planned, required or requested;
- ensure the care, control, maintenance and security of course equipment, materials and stock with tools and equipment being stored away after each session;
- maintain stores inventory for consumables, equipment and delivery resources;
- carry out ordering of stock in line with college financial procedures and update online ordering database;
- provide a stores issue service for course consumables and an issue and return service for all departmental equipment and other course items;
- participate in course team; student consultative committees; and curriculum area meetings as required;
- carry out duties which support marketing and promotion of course programme;
- support lecturers and students in undertaking workshop based activities, in line with agreed timetable;
- carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
Essential Criteria:
- Minimum VCQ / NVQ Level 3 Qualification and/or equivalent in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
- GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
- IOSH Managing Safely (If you are not IOSH qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible)
- Appropriate Health & Safety training (or willingness to undertake appropriate training)
- First Aid qualification (If you are not First Aid qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible)
- Recent and relevant experience of the technical field/s concerned
- A good understanding of the technical support role in Further & Higher Education
- Industry experience working in an automotive workshop environment
- Be competent in the use of the following equipment: Automotive workshop equipment eg. four wheel aligner, diagnostic scan tools
- Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills
- Ability to work harmoniously with students and colleagues
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Ability to work flexibly
Desirable Criteria:
- Ability to drive college minibus
Welsh Language Requirements:
- Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1 Desirable
- Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1 Desirable
