Join the City of Harrisonburg Public Works Department as a Technician I - Stormwater Maintenance and help protect our community’s waterways and infrastructure through hands-on, meaningful work. Operate equipment, maintain drainage systems and stormwater facilities, and build a career serving the residents of Harrisonburg.

The Technician I - Stormwater Maintenance role is a full-time position with benefits, and applicants may be considered for levels within the department at an annual rate commensurate with applicant qualifications. An exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. As of the initial posting date, the City will be filling two Technician positions within Stormwater Maintenance.

Preferred Hiring Ranges:

• Technician I: $20.45 - $22.50 per hour (equivalent to $42,536 - $46,800 annually)
• Technician II: $22.35 - $24.58 per hour (equivalent to $46,488 - $51,126 annually)

As a Technician I in Stormwater Maintenance, you'll:

• Perform maintenance, repair, and cleaning of stormwater best management practices (BMPs), stormwater pipes, drainage ditches, culverts, inlets, outfalls, and related infrastructure;
• Assist with excavation, grading, pipe work, alignment of pipes, minor concrete work, sediment and debris removal, and restoration of disturbed areas;
• Perform vegetation management associated with stormwater BMP maintenance, including mowing, trimming, brush clearing, seeding, and tree and stump removal;
• Operate equipment and tools used in stormwater and grounds maintenance, including but not limited to backhoe, excavator, loader, dump truck, tractor, chainsaw, pumps, saws, jackhammers, and related hand tools;
• Perform pre-trip inspections and routine cleaning of vehicles, tools, and equipment, and reports maintenance needs;
• Set up and maintain a work zone in accordance with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) requirements;
• Perform proper handling, spill prevention, spill response, and cleanup procedures for fuels and other pollutants to minimize entry into the stormwater system;
• Assist with:
• The inspection of stormwater BMPs and system components;
• Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4)-related field activities, including identification of visible issues or potential illicit discharges;
• Preparation of daily reports, work orders, and inventory records;
• Responding to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding drainage, stormwater, water quality, and flooding concerns;
• Snow and ice removal, and other emergency response duties as assigned;
• Special event duties;
• Operate a City vehicle in the performance of the job duties;
• Perform related tasks as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements for the Technician I Level:

• High School diploma or GED and minimal experience in stormwater maintenance, public works maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction, equipment operation, concrete work, pipe work, or related work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
• 18 years of age or older by hire date.
• Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B with air brakes. (Applicants without a CDL will be considered for the Journeyman level within the department; however, to progress to the Technician I level, a CDL is required. The department provides paid, on-the-job-training.)
• Possession of a current VDOT Basic Work Zone Safety Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment (or as soon as class schedule permits).
• Participation in a rotating, stand-by and/or on-call work program for off-hours emergency response.

The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

• DMV record review;
• Job-specific physical; and
