About the opportunity

Microscopy Australia is the national collaborative research infrastructure providing researchers with access to world class microscopy, imaging and characterisation capabilities. Through a network of leading facilities hosted by the University of Sydney and partner universities and research organisations across Australia, Microscopy Australia supports cutting edge research, innovation and industry engagement across fields ranging from health and medicine to materials science and environmental research.

The Technician Commitment is an internationally recognised initiative driving systemic and cultural change for technical and scientific professionals across higher education, research and innovation. Supported by a major Australian Government investment, this team will support the establishment and delivery of the Technician Commitment in Australia in partnership with Microscopy Australia, the Academy for Collaborative Research Infrastructure (ACRI), and the UK Technician Commitment team.

As the Marketing and Communications Officer, you will play a key role in building the profile, visibility and impact of the newly established Technician Commitment in Australia. Working within the national Technician Commitment Australia team and reporting to the Program Lead, you will develop and deliver an integrated marketing and communications strategy across digital, print, media and event channels.

You will create compelling content, manage the Technician Commitment's digital presence, secure positive media coverage and lead initiatives that raise awareness and engagement among technical professionals, institutional leaders, government, funders and the broader community. The role will work closely with the UK Technician Commitment team to maintain consistency with the global initiative's identity, branding and messaging while developing campaigns and communications tailored to Australian audiences.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant initiative that will strengthen technical career pathways, celebrate the contribution of technical professionals and support the future capability of Australia's research and innovation workforce.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop and deliver integrated marketing, communications and stakeholder engagement strategies that build awareness and recognition of the Technician Commitment across Australia
  • create, manage and optimise content across digital, social media, website and email channels, ensuring messaging is engaging, accessible and aligned with brand standards
  • identify, develop and promote compelling stories, campaigns and communications materials that showcase the impact of technical professionals and the Technician Commitment program
  • drive media and public relations activities, including media releases, proactive story pitching, media engagement and support for spokespersons and key stakeholders
  • work collaboratively with signatories, supporters, delivery partners and the UK Technician Commitment team to coordinate campaigns, events and communications activities
  • monitor communications performance, media coverage and audience engagement, using insights and analytics to strengthen future communications and manage reputational issues where required.

About you

  • demonstrated experience in marketing, communications, media, public relations or a related field, including the development and delivery of multi-channel communications plans
  • excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills, with experience producing high-quality digital, media and promotional content for diverse audiences
  • proven experience managing websites, social media platforms, marketing campaigns and media relations activities, including securing positive media coverage
  • ability to translate complex programs, research, evidence or policy issues into clear, engaging and audience-focused communications
  • strong stakeholder engagement, organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative environment
  • experience in higher education, research, research infrastructure or a similar sector would be advantageous, together with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and a relevant qualification or equivalent professional experience.
