ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $48,000.00 - 60,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

The Traffic Operations Apprentice is an entry-level position focused on learning the basics of traffic operations Signs and Pavement Markings work. This role supports the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and work zone traffic control to help keep roads safe for all modes of travel.

Working under supervision, the Apprentice assists with traffic control, performing field work, and learning how to use associated tools and equipment. The position includes hands-on training and opportunities to earn certifications while building skills in safety, equipment operation, and traffic standards such as MUTCD and LCUASS, with the goal of advancing into a Technician I, Traffic Ops position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Perform general labor tasks related to Traffic Operations, including loading materials, site cleanup, and basic tool use.
  • Support the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Follow all safety procedures to protect yourself, your team, and the traveling public while working in and around roadways.
  • Help ensure traffic moves safely and efficiently through work zones.
  • Assist with basic roadway inspections for signs and pavement markings.
  • Learn to read maps, plans, and layouts for traffic control and field work.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in a clean and safe working condition.
  • Communicate with team members, supervisors, and the public in a professional manner. Report safety concerns, damaged signs, or roadway issues to supervisors.
  • Participate in training programs and work toward required certifications (e.g., flagger, work zone safety, IMSA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Traffic Operations.
  • Perform snow removal and operate snow removal equipment.

  • Ability to perform basic math functions.
  • Ability to adhere to safety requirements and identify safety concerns and improvements
  • May require basic welding skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid drive’s license required

Certifications/Licenses/Specialized Training

  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months
  • Ability to obtain a Colorado Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification within 3 months to 1 year
  • Ability to complete required equipment and safety training (e.g., striping equipment, sign installation tools)
  • Ability to obtain Forklift certification within 3 months
