Job Description
Venture Dynamics is hiring a Technical Writer – SMARTS Systems to support a shipyard environment by developing and maintaining technical documentation, instructional materials, and process documentation for SMARTS applications and associated shipyard business processes. This role translates system functionality, technical workflows, and shipyard operational procedures into clear, user-friendly materials that support employee training, production operations, and effective system utilization. The position works closely with shipyard subject matter experts, system users, managers, developers, production personnel, and support teams to ensure documentation remains accurate and current. This role is offered on a contract basis, with strong potential for long-term or permanent placement based on performance and client need.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and update technical documentation and instructional materials related to SMARTS applications, shipyard workflows, and business processes.
- Create step-by-step user guides, quick reference sheets, standard operating procedures, process documentation, instructional manuals, and other reference materials for shipyard personnel.
- Translate SMARTS system functionality and technical information into clear, accurate, and user-friendly procedural documentation.
- Create and maintain workflow diagrams, process maps, and visual documentation using Microsoft Visio or similar applications.
- Work with shipyard subject matter experts, managers, developers, support personnel, production teams, and department users to gather, verify, and document process information.
- Review and revise documentation to reflect system functionality, user interface changes, enhancements, shipyard operations, and business process updates.
- Maintain organized documentation libraries, established templates, document standards, and version control.
- Gather user feedback and support process improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to improve documentation clarity, usability, and consistency within the shipyard environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum two years of experience in technical writing, technical documentation, business process documentation, systems documentation, or related work.
- Strong technical writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts, shipyard workflows, and operational procedures into clear information for system users.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to organize complex technical information logically and apply established document standards, templates, and version-control practices.
- Ability to interview subject matter experts and accurately translate technical, shipyard, and operational information into documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and documentation updates while working independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional shipyard environment.
- Must maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling company systems, shipyard documentation, and sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree, technical training, or coursework in business, communications, information systems, education, or a related field.
- Experience creating instructional materials, process documentation, workflow diagrams, or system user guides.
- Experience supporting software applications, business systems, or shipyard, manufacturing, industrial, or operational processes.
- Experience using Microsoft Visio or similar process-mapping software.
- Experience with SharePoint, documentation repositories, or document management systems.
- Previous experience working in a shipyard, manufacturing facility, industrial environment, or other complex production setting.
Additional Information
- Work schedule is 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a 60-minute lunch.
- Shift availability is All.
- No security clearance is required.
- Work is performed primarily in a shipyard office or administrative environment and involves prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer station, including frequent keyboarding and visual focus.
- Occasional standing, walking, or movement between office, production, training, or shipyard locations may be required.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
- Occasional travel between company locations or shipyard facilities may be required based on operational needs.
