Job Description

The Technical Writer – Journeyman develops, edits, and manages comprehensive technical documentation in support of enterprise systems and programs. This role produces standardized materials such as user guides, SOPs, and online help to ensure clarity, consistency, and usability for technical and non‑technical audiences.

The writer collaborates closely with engineers, subject matter experts, and program teams to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible content. They maintain documentation governance, style guides, and repositories while incorporating user feedback and compliance requirements such as accessibility standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and edit technical documentation including user manuals, SOPs, system guides, and reports.
  • Establish and enforce style guides, templates, and documentation standards across the program.
  • Collaborate with engineers and subject matter experts to capture accurate technical information and system behavior.
  • Use documentation and content management tools such as MadCap Flare and Confluence to manage materials.
  • Conduct document reviews and quality assurance to ensure clarity, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain documentation repositories with appropriate version control and accessibility.
  • Incorporate user feedback and usability testing results to improve documentation effectiveness.
  • Support training initiatives by developing supplemental instructional and reference materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field (e.g., Communications, Technical Writing).
  • 4–7 years of experience preparing, editing, and managing technical documentation for IT or engineering environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to standardize reporting and documentation across complex programs.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to structure, grammar, and clarity.
  • Familiarity with documentation tools and content management platforms.
  • Active Secret clearance and U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with structured authoring or XML‑based documentation systems.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards such as Section 508 compliance.
  • Professional writing certification from STC or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting documentation in regulated or federal IT environments.

Compensation ranges for ASM Research positions vary depending on multiple factors; including but not limited to, location, skill set, level of education, certifications, client requirements, contract-specific affordability, government clearance and investigation level, and years of experience. The compensation displayed for this role is a general guideline based on these factors and is unique to each role. Monetary compensation is one component of ASM's overall compensation and benefits package for employees.
