Technical Underwriting & Reinsurance Manager

The Technical Underwriting Manager plays a critical role in shaping underwriting excellence, ensuring adherence to technical standards, and driving continuous improvement across the portfolio.

Reinsurance management oversees the purchase of reinsurance including internal treaty arrangements with Group and manages external facultative reinsurance purchases across the Business Unit ensuring coverage adequacy and optimization.

This role is part of the Underwriting Leadership team providing deep technical support to the Chief Underwriting Officer, LOB Heads and Underwriters, leading strategic underwriting initiatives, and contributing significantly to profitable business growth through robust governance, insights, and innovation.

Technical Leadership & Governance

• Lead the implementation of underwriting strategies, technical standards, and risk appetite changes across the portfolio.
• Ensure compliance with internal governance frameworks, regulatory requirements, and global underwriting standards.
• Define, update, and embed underwriting guidelines, frameworks, rating methodologies, and best practices.
• Lead and support underwriting assurance activities, audits, compliance reviews, and readiness reviews to maintain strong risk controls.
• Manage Underwriting empowerment and delegation across all Lines of Business.

Complex Risk Review

• Support Underwriters with non‑standard queries across all Lines of Business.
• Provide expert guidance to Underwriters on terms, conditions, mitigation strategies, and complex technical assessments e.g., Cut-Through Clauses, Downgrade Clauses, and LTA’s.

Reinsurance Management

• Manage internal reinsurance treaties to Group, including structure alignment, renewals, documentation, and stakeholder coordination.
• Oversee reinsurance coverage adequacy across the BU, including monitoring retentions/limits, aggregations, and coverage issues; escalate gaps and recommend optimizations.
• Lead reinsurance data calls, ensuring timely, accurate submissions and reconciliation of exposure, premium, claims and bordereaux data.
• Coordinate and ensure governance over external facultative reinsurance purchases across the BU, including placement strategy, reinsurer engagement, terms negotiation support, approvals, and post-placement administration.

Operational Excellence & Transformation

• Lead high‑impact initiatives related to underwriting operational transformation, workflow optimization, and process efficiency.
• Identify gaps or inefficiencies in underwriting processes and drive solutions to enhance consistency and turnaround time.
• Contribute to thought leadership on emerging risks and product‑related developments.

Digital & Data Enablement

• Drive adoption of digital underwriting tools, analytics, automation, and decision‑support technologies.
• Promote data‑driven decision‑making and enhance technical underwriting quality through better tools and insights.

Delegated Authority Oversight

• Oversee governance of delegated authorities and empowered underwriting structures.
• Ensure robust controls, audits, performance reviews, and compliance with underwriting governance frameworks.
