Technical Underwriter

The Technical Underwriter plays a critical role in shaping underwriting excellence, ensuring adherence to technical standards, and driving continuous improvement across the portfolio. This role provides deep technical support to Underwriters, leads strategic initiatives, and contributes significantly to profitable business growth through robust governance, insights, and innovation.

Technical Leadership & Governance

• Lead the implementation of underwriting strategies, technical standards, and risk appetite changes across the portfolio.
• Ensure compliance with internal governance frameworks, regulatory requirements, and global underwriting standards.
• Define, update, and embed underwriting guidelines, frameworks, rating methodologies, and best practices.
• Lead and support internal audits, assurance activities, and readiness reviews to maintain strong risk controls.

Portfolio & Performance Management

• Monitor portfolio performance, including loss ratios, trends, and technical pricing adequacy, to identify areas for improvement.
• Partner with Portfolio Management and Actuarial teams to refine pricing models, tools, and assumptions.
• Diagnose complex or ambiguous portfolio issues and develop cost‑effective, strategic recommendations.

Complex Risk Review & Referral Management

• Handle the most complex risk referrals, Requests for Empowerment, and non‑standard queries within delegated authority.
• Provide expert guidance to Underwriters on terms, conditions, mitigation strategies, and complex technical assessments.
• Support decision‑making on cross‑Line‑of‑Business issues and specialty risk considerations.

Operational Excellence & Transformation

• Lead high‑impact initiatives related to operational transformation, workflow optimization, and process efficiency.
• Identify gaps or inefficiencies in underwriting processes and drive solutions to enhance consistency and turnaround time.

Market Insights & Product Innovation

• Identify new product opportunities, emerging risks, and innovative solutions to strengthen competitive advantage.
• Contribute thought leadership on technical, market, and product‑related developments.

Digital & Data Enablement

• Drive adoption of digital underwriting tools, analytics, automation, and decision‑support technologies.
• Promote data‑driven decision‑making and enhance technical underwriting quality through better tools and insights.

Delegated Authority Oversight

• Oversee governance of delegated authorities and empowered underwriting structures.
• Ensure robust controls, audits, performance reviews, and compliance with underwriting governance frameworks.
