Job Description

Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Technical Supervisor – Blood to provide technical leadership and oversight for high- and moderate-complexity clinical laboratory testing within the blood testing specialty. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, quality, reliability, and regulatory compliance of laboratory testing operations. The Technical Supervisor will provide day-to-day technical guidance to laboratory personnel, oversee quality assurance and quality control activities, support method and instrument validation, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure laboratory practices meet applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on clinical laboratory expertise with proven supervisory experience and a comprehensive understanding of laboratory quality systems. Key Responsibilities Provide technical supervision and oversight for high- and moderate-complexity laboratory testing within the blood specialty. Ensure testing procedures are performed accurately, consistently, and in accordance with established laboratory policies and regulatory requirements. Provide technical guidance, training, and support to clinical laboratory personnel. Monitor laboratory workflows, testing performance, and quality metrics to identify opportunities for improvement. Oversee and participate in method validations, method verifications, and instrument verification activities prior to implementation. Review and evaluate Quality Control (QC) data and investigate results that fall outside established performance criteria. Support the laboratory's Quality Assurance (QA) program, including identification, documentation, investigation, and resolution of quality issues. Troubleshoot instrumentation, testing methodologies, reagents, and other technical laboratory issues. Develop, implement, and document appropriate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) when testing or quality issues are identified. Assist with the implementation and validation of new laboratory instrumentation, assays, methodologies, and processes. Ensure laboratory procedures and documentation remain compliant with CLIA, CAP, applicable state regulations, and internal quality standards . Support regulatory inspections, audits, proficiency testing, and corrective-action responses as needed. Review and maintain laboratory procedures, policies, validation documentation, QC records, and other technical documentation. Collaborate with laboratory leadership, quality, operations, and other clinical laboratory disciplines to maintain efficient and compliant laboratory operations. Help ensure laboratory personnel demonstrate and maintain appropriate competency for assigned testing activities. Serve as a technical resource for laboratory staff and assist with the investigation and resolution of complex testing issues. What Success Looks Like The Technical Supervisor will help ensure that blood testing operations consistently produce accurate, timely, and defensible patient results while maintaining a strong culture of quality and regulatory compliance. Success in this role requires balancing hands-on technical expertise with effective leadership, continuous improvement, and rigorous laboratory quality standards. Requirements Required Qualifications Candidates must meet all of the following requirements: Minimum of 2 years of previous laboratory supervisory experience . MLS certification through ASCP or AMT . Master's degree with at least 4 years of clinical laboratory experience , OR Bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of clinical laboratory experience . Minimum of 4–6 years of experience performing high- and/or moderate-complexity clinical laboratory testing within the applicable blood specialty, consistent with the education and certification requirements above. Demonstrated experience with method validations, instrument verifications, troubleshooting, and implementation of corrective actions . Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) principles and practices. Experience working across relevant clinical laboratory disciplines. Working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements, including CLIA, CAP, and applicable state requirements . Certification / Licensure Required: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification through ASCP or AMT . Any additional state-specific laboratory license or credential required for the location of employment must be maintained as applicable. Equipment Experience Experience with one or more of the following platforms is highly desirable: Abbott Alinity hq Abbott Alinity ci ASI laboratory instrumentation/platforms iSED Elite Bio-Rad Geenius CellaVision Hematek Direct experience with every listed platform is not required ; however, candidates should demonstrate the ability to become proficient with new laboratory instrumentation and testing methodologies. Knowledge, Skills & Competencies Strong technical knowledge of clinical laboratory testing involving blood specimens. Strong understanding of high- and moderate-complexity testing requirements. Ability to analyze QC trends, identify testing anomalies, and determine appropriate corrective action. Strong laboratory troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to day-to-day laboratory operations. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, reproducible laboratory results. Ability to effectively train, coach, and provide technical direction to laboratory personnel. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical laboratory environment.
