Do you understand how sustainable agriculture works in practice, not just on paper? Are you someone who can sit with a smallholder farmer, a cooperative, and a corporate buyer in the same week and help each of them see a viable path forward together? If so, this role was designed with you in mind.
What you can expect:
Preferred by Nature is looking for a Technical Specialist on Agri-Business and Enterprise Development to strengthen our mission-driven project portfolio in Indonesia. You will support the design and delivery of sustainable agri-business models, income diversification strategies, and market access solutions for smallholder farmers and supply chain actors across our priority landscapes in Indonesia. Working closely with project managers, local partners, and a range of stakeholders, you will help translate sustainability commitments into viable, bankable business solutions that create lasting incentives for farmers to shift to more sustainable production practices.
Working with us is never routine, so in your first year you can expect the following areas to be central to your work.
Design and support the development of sustainable agri-business models and enterprise development strategies for smallholder producers and supply chain actors.
Identify and assess market access opportunities and develop solutions that connect smallholder farmers to buyers aligned with sustainable production standards.
Support project implementation across active engagements in cacao agroforestry and rice value chains, including scoping studies, feasibility analyses, and business plan development.
Conduct field visits, stakeholder consultations, and multi-partner coordination across project landscapes in Riau, Central and East Java, and Lampung.
Prepare high-quality technical outputs including training materials, stakeholder briefs, donor reports, and project documentation.
Contribute to cross-project learning and support the development of future project proposals in Indonesia.
Your first year with us:
Within three months, you will:
Develop a solid understanding of PbN’s mission-driven project portfolio in Indonesia, including active projects, partner relationships, and key deliverables.
Complete onboarding on internal systems and donor requirements, and begin contributing to ongoing field activities and partner engagements.
Build effective working relationships with the project team, local partners, and supply chain actors across priority landscapes.
Within six months, you will:
Take ownership of specific agri-business deliverables within active projects, including scoping studies, feasibility assessments, and business model development for assigned commodities.
Lead stakeholder consultations and facilitate workshops with smallholder organisations, cooperatives, financial institutions, and private sector partners.
Contribute substantively to donor reporting and internal progress updates with well-documented field findings and technical analysis.
Within twelve months, you will:
Independently lead the development of sustainable business models and market access strategies for at least one commodity or landscape, from concept through to implementation support.
Contribute to the design of future project proposals by integrating agri-business and market access components aligned with Indonesia’s priority landscapes.
Support the exploration and piloting of the Brand2Farm strategy as a sustainable financing mechanism within the project context.
Important that you:
Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in agribusiness, agricultural economics, rural development, sustainability, or a related field.
Bring at least 3 years of experience in project implementation focused on agribusiness, sustainable supply chains, or rural enterprise development.
Have hands-on experience working with multiple agriculture commodities and a strong ability to identify viable business opportunities within sustainability or development contexts.
Have experience conducting field visits, stakeholder consultations, and coordinating with multi-partner teams across rural or remote locations.
Have strong analytical and research skills, including experience preparing feasibility studies, business plans, and scoping documents.
Possess excellent facilitation skills and are comfortable leading workshops, FGDs, and partner discussions with diverse audiences.
Have strong verbal and written communication skills in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.
Are highly proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality work independently within a remote and international team.
Would also be great, but not necessary, if you:
Have experience working with smallholder producer organisations, cooperatives, or farmer groups in Indonesia.
Are familiar with donor compliance requirements and project cycle management in NGO or development project settings.
Have knowledge of cacao, rice, or other priority commodities in Sumatra or Java production landscapes.
Have experience with market systems development, value chain analysis, or sustainable finance mechanisms.
Are familiar with sustainability topics such as climate mitigation, land use, or responsible supply chains.
If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you!
