Join the Charter Steel Commercial team as a Technical Services Engineer.

Job Summary:

Help customers turn technical challenges into innovative steel solutions. As a Technical Services Engineer, you'll partner directly with customers to understand their application requirements, develop material specifications, and ensure Charter's products deliver the right performance for their needs. Working cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, Planning, and Operations, you'll connect customer needs with manufacturing capabilities, resolve technical issues, and play a key role in developing new products that drive growth across a variety of industries.

Position Specifics:

  • Location and Travel: This is a remote position with up to 40% travel to customer locations throughout the U.S. and Charter Steel facilities in Wisconsin and Ohio. Candidates must reside in a state where Charter Steel is authorized to employ remote employees.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. Charter Manufacturing is unable to sponsor for employment visas at this time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn the specification review, MDS review, material claim processes and be able take on the process as needed.
  • Manage customer claims and respond to field issues/concerns.
  • Understand internal technical resources and leverage them in support of customer expectations.
  • Report significant customer technical issues to all levels of the business.
  • Lead and/or support New Product Development within Charter as well as partnering with the customer.
  • Review customer and product documents including but not limited to specifications, drawings, and material design sheets for relevancy and accuracy.
  • Act as a technical resource for the Sales function (both Inside and Outside Sales).
  • Interpret customer specifications to recommend the appropriate Charter product for a given application.
  • Manage the expectations of the customer by reviewing specifications to determine feasibility of the requirements for the customer application.
  • Recommend improvements to the customer’s process or business’s manufacturing process to support the product offering to the end customer.
  • Attend and participate in industry/association events in support of Charter’s products.
  • Arrange technical meetings between the customer and production quality and technical functions as needed to improve or develop products or solve specific issues.
  • Develop strong technical relationships with customers to work through issues.
  • Influence and suggest improvements for customer’s processes.
  • Follow Environmental, Quality, and Safety Management System procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to meet the essential job requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, as outlined in the job description.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy/Materials, Engineering or related degree or equivalent experience
  • Five plus years’ in process engineering or manufacturing in the production or use of Charter products or steel-making
  • Two plus years' experience involving customer interactions.
  • Strong understanding of the specialty metals or steelmaking process.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Technical ability to understand, recommend, and raise concerns with customer specifications.
  • Technical ability to understand customer processes and associated technical needs
  • Interpersonal skills to work with individuals at all levels of an organization and utilize the internal knowledge base to solve technical problems.
  • Experience in coaching and influencing others to achieve results.
  • Proven ability to explain technical issues and influence product specifications with external and internal customers.
  • Proficiency in the basic features of Microsoft Office software programs.
  • Ability to travel up to 40%.

Nice to Haves:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Physical Sciences, Engineering, or related advanced degree.
  • Experience in a related market as a customer or a supplier of steel products.
  • Experience in strategic planning.
  • Experience managing within a highly documented manufacturing quality system.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience in a technical discipline.
  • Experience with QS9000, ISO9000, and/or TS16949 quality systems.
