Description:

WTVG is Toledo, Ohio’s #1 station, and we are seeking a highly capable, leadership-driven Technical Operations Manager to oversee our broadcast and master control operations. The ideal candidate must be a hands-on leader—fully capable of stepping in to perform any duty of a Technical Media Producer (TMP) or Master Control Operator (MCO)—while taking on key managerial responsibilities. You will lead, train, and schedule the operations team, streamline production workflows, oversee software and hardware technical maintenance, and champion on-air innovation to keep our live newscasts fresh, clean, and engaging.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Leadership & Operational Management:
Team Scheduling & Coverage: Create, manage, and optimize shift schedules for all operations staff. Review and approve paid time off (PTO) requests, ensuring robust staffing and shift coverage for all live newscasts and 24/7 master control streams.
Training & Mentorship: Onboard and train TMPs and MCOs. Actively mentor team members, helping them innovate, develop new skills, and implement fresh, clean technical techniques while directing or editing.
Process Improvement: Continuously review, document, and streamline control room and master control workflows to maximize efficiency, reduce error rates, and improve broadcast quality.

Technical, Maintenance & Vendor Coordination:
Technical Maintenance Scheduling: Plan and execute scheduled server maintenance, software updates, and system reboots in coordination with engineering.
Vendor Service Coordination: Serve as the primary operational liaison with hardware and software vendors, coordinating maintenance, updates, and troubleshooting for automated control room and master control systems.
Discrepancy Resolution: Review daily on-air discrepancy reports. Thoroughly investigate any broadcast, technical, or timing errors, and design/implement immediate resolutions.

Hands-on Production & Master Control Execution:
Technical Execution: Maintain full competency, readiness, and availability to cover any TMP shift and perform all the directing and master control duties needed, including Ross Overdrive automation systems, production video switchers, digital audio consoles, graphics systems, and robotic cameras.
Master Control Operations: Capable of managing Digital Broadcast multi-channel playout systems, NVerzion master control automation, monitoring transmitter feeds, executing emergency broadcast procedures (EAS), and ensuring strict adherence to all FCC rules and regulations.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience: 3–5 years of television production or master control experience, with a proven track record of leadership, supervisory, or management success in a live broadcast environment.
Hands-on Technical Expertise: Proficiency with modern live-production automation systems, digital audio boards, video switchers, Edius non-linear video editing software, and master control infrastructure.
Operational Leadership: Outstanding organizational skills with experience managing team schedules, tracking PTO, and coordinating vendor activities.
Problem-Solving & Calm Under Pressure: Exceptional troubleshooting skills, with the ability to maintain composure, make critical decisions, and lead a team through live-on-air emergencies or technical failures.
FCC Compliance Knowledge: In-depth understanding of FCC guidelines, broadcast standards, Emergency Alert Systems (EAS), and closed captioning protocols.
Schedule Flexibility: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including being on-call to assist with emergency shift coverage or critical technical issues during breaking news, weekends, and holidays.
