Job Description

  • Full-time, Ongoing position
  • Based at Western’s Kingswood (Penrith) campus, with flexible working arrangements
  • Salary: HEW Level 5 $85,778 – $97,006 per annum, plus 17% Super and Leave Loading


Provide hands-on technical support that underpins engineering teaching, research and laboratory safety.

The Opportunity

You will provide technical support across teaching and research activities within geotechnical and environmental engineering. This includes preparing laboratory and workshop spaces, setting up equipment, and supporting the safe delivery of undergraduate practical classes. You will guide staff and students in the correct and safe use of equipment, ensuring facilities are fit for purpose and well maintained.

You will also support research activities by advising on equipment use, assisting with data collection, and maintaining specialist engineering equipment. You will coordinate the servicing and procurement of equipment, liaise with academic staff and suppliers, and contribute to maintaining high-quality research facilities across the Engineering team.

You will play a key role in maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory requirements. This includes conducting safety inductions, maintaining chemical inventories and Safety Data Sheets, and ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. You will also contribute to audits, continuous improvement initiatives, and the development of Standard Operating Procedures to support efficient technical operations.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Practical teaching spaces are prepared, safe and fit for purpose for scheduled classes.
  • Research equipment is maintained, calibrated and available to support research activity.
  • Staff and students receive clear technical guidance on safe equipment use.
  • Laboratories and workshops remain compliant with regulatory and University requirements.
  • SOPs, stocktakes and audits are completed accurately and on time.

About You

  • An undergraduate degree in Construction, Civil, Structural or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent experience and training.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical support in engineering teaching and research environments.
  • Proven capability in operating, maintaining and calibrating complex geotechnical or environmental engineering equipment.
  • Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collegially in multidisciplinary teams.
