The Academy of Visual Arts is the first-of-its-kind local institution in delivering Visual Arts education, which is looking for a responsible and energetic team player to join the technical team. The appointee is expected to provide support to teaching and administrative duties of studios, and will be stationed at the Kai Tak Campus.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the daily operations mainly of the Printmaking Studio, and assist in the daily operation of Drawing and Painting Studio, 3D Printing Studio, Sculpture Studio, etc.;
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of all printmaking facilities and equipment, conducting routine cleaning, calibration, and safety checks on presses, exposure units, washout areas, ventilation systems, and related tools to maintain consistent studio performance;
- Integrate new technologies into printmaking workstation, collaborate with course instructors to establish studio schedules, safety protocols and troubleshoot any related issues;
- Provide technical guidance and support to students of all levels, offering advice on techniques, and processes, typically assisting course instructors for in-class demonstration and preparation of teaching materials and tools, ensuring smooth class operations with mechanical equipment;
- Support the integration of digital workflows into printmaking processes, including RIP output preparation, digital plate production, and colour-managed printing aligned with contemporary printmaking practice;
- Maintain comprehensive inventory of tools and equipment and coordinate procurement affairs;
- Collaborate with faculty on studio reorganisation and enhancement to ensure a safe studio environment;
- Develop and implement procedures to maintain a safe, orderly, and pedagogically effective studio environment, including chemical storage protocols, workflow organisation, cleanliness standards, and compliance with OSHC and Labour Department guidelines;
- Foster a positive and inclusive studio environment that encourages experimentation and creativity while prioritising the safety of students and the studio;
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to develop and execute studio projects, workshops, and events; and
- Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required.
Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, Fine Arts or a related field, at least 2 years of post-qualification experience,or equivalent practical experience;
- Solid experience and knowledge in studio/workshop work and operation of studio equipment in the respective areas, inclusive but not limited to printmaking, prototyping, 3D printing, sculpture, etc.;experience and knowledge in studio/workshop work and operation of studio equipment in the respective areas, inclusive but not limited to printmaking, prototyping, 3D printing, sculpture, etc.;
- Strong proficiency in Photoshop; working knowledge of InDesign/Illustrator; with additional ability to prepare print-ready files, manage layer-based colour separations, and optimise artwork for both analogue and digital print workflows;
- Experience with RIP software, ICC profiling, and monitor calibration; including troubleshooting colour inconsistencies, maintaining calibrated viewing conditions, and supporting students in producing accurate digital-to-physical output;
- Experience in UV printing, dye-sublimation printing, and inkjet printing would be desirable, particularly in relation to colour-managed workflows and digital-to-physical output consistency;
- Printmaking skills in intaglio, relief, and screen-print; safe press operation; with further competence in plate preparation, ink modification, registration systems, paper dampening, exposure processes, and maintaining printmaking tools and presses;
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic studio environment;
- Familiarity or proficiency in software such as Blender and Rhino is a plus;amiliarity or proficiency in software such as Blender and Rhino is a plus;
- Knowledge of Hong Kong OSHC/Labour Department safety regulations; ability to conduct risk assessments; first-aid trained; with the capacity to ensure chemical storage compliance, manage safe handling protocols, and guide student monitors in safety procedures;
- Ability to maintain MSDS records, ensure chemical safety, and supervise hazardous-waste procedures; including solvent management, controlled disposal workflows, and correct labelling and segregation of materials;
- Responsibilities for inventory, materials ordering, maintenance scheduling; supplier links in HK, Mainland China, Europe, North America; with ability to track stock usage trends, anticipate material shortages, and procure specialised printmaking supplies not available domestically;
- Solid command of written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua);
- Keen awareness of emerging trends and advancements in arts and technological opportunities;
- Good interpersonal, communication and organisational skills and be a good team player; and
- Proficiency in computer applications, particularly MS Office (e.g., Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

The initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of two years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
