About the opportunity

The University of Tasmania is seeking a Technical Officer to join the Cavitation Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Australian Maritime College's Newnham Campus. This position plays a key role in supporting the laboratory's research and teaching activities through the manufacture, assembly, maintenance, and operation of specialised equipment and instrumentation.

As our new Technical Officer, you will undertake a diverse range of technical activities, including precision machining and subtractive manufacturing, assembly of complex research equipment, plant and facility maintenance, and the application of best practice Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards. Working closely with the CRL team, you will contribute to the successful delivery of innovative research projects and learning outcomes.

Funded by the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Platforms Division, this position provides critical technical expertise to support the development, operation, and continuous improvement of advanced experimental facilities and equipment, enabling the laboratory to achieve its research objectives.

What you’ll do:

  • Undertake the machining, fabrication, and assembly of engineering laboratory equipment and instrumentation, ensuring precise fits and adherence to required tolerances.
  • Assist in the development of new equipment and associated accessories.
  • Perform routine maintenance of facilities, equipment, and associated infrastructure to support operational requirements.
  • Apply and promote best practice Work Health and Safety (WHS) principles, policies, and procedures.

­What we’re looking for:

  • Trade qualification and relevant industry experience in a related technical field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer numerical control (CNC) machining, including subtractive programming, simulation, operation, and other advanced manufacturing methods.
  • Ability to work independently under broad direction while supporting research projects and activities.
  • Ability to assemble and maintain complex, high-precision equipment to a high standard.
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnostics, fault finding, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with, and follow direction from, academic and professional staff.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105,665 comprising base salary within the range of $80,869 to $90,312 plus 17% superannuation.
