Overview

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a skilled Technical Engineer to join the Walbridge team. In this role, you will serve as a technical expert for mechanical and electrical construction activities, helping ensure work is performed in accordance with contract requirements, applicable codes, accepted professional standards, and company quality expectations.

You will provide technical support from design and preconstruction through field installation, equipment startup, commissioning, and turnover. Working closely with owners, architects, engineers, project teams, and specialty trade contractors, you will solve complex field-related challenges, support quality control planning, and monitor construction for schedule performance and conformance to plans and specifications.

Your technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and focus on quality will help project teams deliver safe, reliable, and efficient building systems while supporting successful startup and operational readiness.

You will work from a long-term project in New Carlisle, IN.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Technical Support & Constructability

  • Provide technical support during design and preconstruction to assist owners, architects, engineers, and project teams.
  • Participate in constructability reviews to identify cost-effective, schedule-efficient construction methods and resolve technical concerns before installation.
  • Provide expert technical guidance to field and project personnel, including interpretation of codes, contract requirements, and specialty equipment needs.

Quality Control & Field Coordination

  • Support implementation of the project’s four-phase quality control plan, inspection process, and required documentation.
  • Monitor field construction performed by mechanical, electrical, and specialty subcontractors for schedule performance and conformance to contract documents.
  • Review specifications, bid inquiries, submittals, and related technical documents to confirm material, equipment, code, and field activity requirements are met.

Startup, Commissioning & Turnover

  • Manage equipment startup and turnover activities through the V-Start (KAN-BAN) process.
  • Coordinate equipment integration, system readiness, testing, commissioning, deficiency resolution, and turnover documentation.
  • Partner with project teams, trade contractors, design professionals, commissioning representatives, and owners to support safe and efficient system activation.

Standards, Documentation & Innovation

  • Develop, issue, and maintain field construction instructions and guidelines using current industry and company practices.
  • Maintain work-controlling documents that define minimum requirements for execution, authority, documentation, and records in accordance with applicable codes and contracts.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend improved construction processes, equipment, materials, techniques, and technologies.
  • Provide technical input to estimating, project controls, project management, and other company functions as needed.

Qualifications

To Qualify, you must have

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical and/or electrical construction, supported by professional industry training and demonstrated technical expertise.
  • Thorough knowledge of discipline-specific construction technology, equipment, materials, methods, applicable codes, quality requirements, and field practices.
  • Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex technical and field construction challenges.
  • Strong planning, scheduling, risk management, change management, and quality control capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of Lean construction principles, ISO requirements, cost participation and control, and construction administration.
  • Proficiency with common business applications and web-based project management systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work on project assignments that may require temporary relocation, extended travel, or frequent visits to non-local job sites.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and passport required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 70% based on project and business needs.
