The Northwest School seeks a temporary Technical Director with professional experience in teaching, theatrical design, and technical direction. This position requires someone who works well with students from 6th-12th grade and can foster mentoring relationships among students in multi-level classroom environments.
The position is open immediately and will end Friday, May 22, 2026.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Serve as Technical Director for Upper School Theater Production May 14-16, 2026.
- Work with theatre director(s) and Costume Design teacher to organize, design, build, and manage the technical aspects of performance, including build/load-in and strike of set. Support student stage managers/assistant directors, backstage crew, and front of house team, etc. in carrying out these roles.
- May collaborate with Stagecraft class teacher and students to complete elements of scenic, lighting, and sound design, though the majority of carpentry work will be completed outside of class time to ensure safety.
- Attend Tech Week rehearsals and supervise/manage the technical aspects of mounting each production.
- Manage/maintain the Black Box theatre technical booth, greenroom, and workshop. Maintain records of inventory.
- Ensure maintenance/upkeep of tools, audio-visual equipment, software, lighting & sound instruments and grid and all technical equipment.
- Collaborate with Performing Arts Department Chair and Theater faculty to ensure adherence to production budget; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
Physical Demands
Work is typically performed in a theatre/classroom environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings. The faculty member occasionally lifts or carries objects of a medium weight, up to 50 pounds, and it is expected that they will lift and work on materials necessary for theatre set design and use building and construction equipment. The ability to climb and work at heights/on ladders is required. Full range of hand and finger motion may be utilized.
QualificationsMinimum
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Experience in professional and educational stage productions and a solid background in theatre technology.

Compensation:
Salary is highly competitive with top independent schools in the region and commensurate with education and experience. This is a stipend only position for the duration of the production, the stipend range is $4000-5000.
Availability: Monday-Friday afternoons/evenings, and some Saturdays.
