Job Description

Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Technical Coordinator at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. The Technical Coordinator is responsible for technical operations, stage services, and support box office needs as assigned. The Center houses two performance spaces, an art gallery, a reception/meeting room, a rehearsal hall, and various technical and support spaces. It is the duty of the Technical Coordinator to ensure the safe and successful execution of events, limited broadcasts, and facility operations through planning, operational execution, and staffing of the facility/events as part of a team working together or individually. The Technical Coordinator is assigned specific events, shifts to supervise, projects to complete, and maintenance duties, as well as supervise and schedule student staff, volunteers, and temporary workers. Specific responsibilities will be assigned by the Director depending on the facility's operational needs, events, shifts, and projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

50% Production

  • Setup, operate, strike, move, and store furniture, theatrical elements, and equipment in all areas of the Center and on occasions outside of the Center.
  • Work collaboratively with various campus departments and units (Music, Art, Communication, Campus Activities, Facilities, etc.) and the other facility staff and university staff to provide the technical and facility services required to support the successful operation of events, performances, and facility activities.
  • Work varying and necessary hours to accomplish assigned projects, supervise staff, stage productions, and to operate various types of technical equipment before, during, and after productions to meet the needs of the client and facility in a timely process and to meet established deadlines.
  • Coordinate, oversee, and perform all technical production and facility operations aspects for assigned events.
  • Assist building users in utilizing the Center’s technical systems in accordance with operational capabilities and event requirements.
  • Production responsibilities include but are not limited to enforcing safety standards, sound system operations and setup, lighting operations and setup, rigging, stage operations, supervising students responsible for live audio/video production for stage and broadcast, audio/video recording and production for archiving and broadcast. Maintain the Center’s operational readiness by following the guidelines and directions issued by the facility Director and Technical Director.
  • Coordinate, contract/document, and supervise staff needed to assist with FOH operations, including but not limited to, event attendance tracking and ticketing.

25% Staffing and Supervision

  • Monitor, track, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate student staff to ensure operational activities are carried out safely and in accordance with established procedures, and properly staffed.
  • Supervise students and volunteers to support front-of-house operations and maintain safe and effective service delivery, ensuring activities are adequately staffed to meet operational needs. This includes performing and supervising front-of-house operations in the lobby and gallery, meeting/banquet setup, coat-check, ushering, house management/customer services for events, and performing strike/room restoration.
  • Monitor, track, supervise, assign, and coordinate the work of volunteers and outside staff and service providers in the facility to ensure safety and production standards are met for all shifts, projects, and events.

10% Equipment Maintenance

  • Coordinate and oversee assigned equipment maintenance and repair, including preparation of specifications, recommendations, and purchasing as needed. Contributes to the development of long-range equipment and replacement plans for the needs of the Center as assigned. Performs hands-on technical stage work in areas of repair, replacement, and event production.

5% Security and Shift Preparation

  • At the start and end of each operational shift, ensure the facility and its equipment are secured and stored or set up in their assigned locations as needed for the current/next event or project.
  • Ensure all lights and equipment are powered up/down and all doors are locked.
  • Facilitate a smooth handoff to the next group(s) of scheduled staff arriving for the next shift by ensuring all equipment is appropriately stored or set up, cleaned, and serviced before departing the Center.

5% Documentation

  • Contribute to and/or prepare information used in event closeouts and administration. For assigned events, maintain event records, maintenance records, inventory records, payroll records, and other production-related paperwork.
  • Maintain, and implement technical and procedural information manuals and training shifts pertaining to the technical and safety operations in the Center. Maintain the recording and photo archive.

5% Miscellaneous

  • Conduct other duties as assigned by the Director in and outside of the Center. Serves as an emergency contact for the facility as assigned. Serve on University Committees as needed. Serve as a backup for the other staff to cover a scheduled shift when necessary.
  • Post content on social media platforms as assigned.
  • Produce promos, teasers, and scripts for all broadcast projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Required Education and Experience - Time of Hire

  • High School Diploma

Preferred Education and Experience at Hire -

  • Two years' experience with stage operations or live events.
  • Two years’ experience with box office management.

Appointment Duration: 12 months

Work Schedule: Full Time, n umerous evenings and weekends; holidays as needed; Monday-Friday, hours as needed to cover events and facility needs. 8-hour shifts when events are not taking place, all other shifts are as long as is needed to cover the needs of events.

Salary $16.00 to $18.00 per hour
