Job Description

Company Description

Lead one of New Zealand's most complex and strategically important operational assets.

Let’s take care of work that matters - people, place and purpose. From roads to recycling to reporting, everyone at WM New Zealand helps take care of our people, protect our whenua and support our communities.

We’re more than waste management – we’re problem solvers, innovators, and hands-on doers. Every one of us, whether behind the wheel, on the tools, or shaping strategy behind the scenes, is helping build a better Aotearoa.

Job Description

WM New Zealand is seeking a passionate and results-driven individual to take on the role of Technical Business Development Manager.

As Waste Management's Tyre Recycling Division continues to expand, we are seeking a Technical Business Development Manager to help establish our tyre-derived products (TDP) business as an industry leader.

This is not a traditional sales role. We're looking for someone with a strong technical mindset, ideally supported by experience in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing, or industrial processing. You'll work closely with customers to identify opportunities, develop new applications, and provide technical expertise that enables the successful adoption of tyre-derived products across a range of industries.

Success in this role will come from building trusted relationships, understanding customer processes, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to create innovative, commercially sustainable solutions. You will play a key role in developing new markets and positioning WM Tyre Recycling at the forefront of the TDP sector.

Our expert team handles the high-risk, high-stakes stuff – and we do it with innovation, safety and our customer need as our key purpose. We’re in the problem-solving business.

If you’re someone who’s constantly asking, “What’s next”, or “How could this be done better?” and ready to lead the conversation, this is for you!

The role you’ll play.

This isn’t your average sales gig.

You’ll be at the intersection of curiosity and commerce - hunting new business opportunities, shaping pricing strategies, and guiding clients through complex hazardous waste challenges.

As our Business Development Sales Manager, you'll be at the forefront of our growth strategy, develop innovative sales initiatives, and nurture client relationships. From conducting compelling sales presentations to closing deals and expanding our customer base, every day will bring new opportunities for success.

Solve. Learn. Repeat.

  • Pre-qualify hazardous waste opportunities and guide customers to the right technical solution
  • Help create solutions that are smart, sustainable, and surprisingly strategic
  • Conduct commercial analysis (cost-benefit, customer profitability, lifecycle, etc.) that informs big decisions

Hunt & Win

  • Help customers navigate risk and compliance in tricky waste categories
  • Respond rapidly and intelligently to urgent customer needs (this is where your curiosity meets calm under pressure)

Ask More, Find More

  • Identify leads early - even in planning stages
  • Dig into the why, not just the what - and uncover projects others miss
  • Collaborate with technical, sale and marketing and operations teams to craft solutions and inspire great customer outcomes

Influence & Inspire

  • Deliver insights that persuade and educate our customers
  • Bring customer insights back into the business to keep us always improving

Qualifications

What you’ll need.

You’re an excellent communicator with strong commercial acumen with a natural flair for leveraging key contracts. You’re motivated, realistic and self-sufficient. You are a natural at building strong relationships. You are a confident self-starter and have the ability to seek out additional opportunities in a highly competitive market.

  • An experienced sales leader demonstrating strong commercial acumen
  • Proven track record in B2B sales.
  • Strategic mindset.
  • Excellent interpersonal & leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CRM tools.
  • Competence in presentation and proposal development
  • Be a Master of Communication, negotiation, and problem-solving.
  • Inherently curious - you ask questions, explore new angles, and never settle for "that’s how it’s always been done" and are always learning
  • A confident hunter - proactive, strategic, and eager to chase opportunity
  • Comfortable with complexity - from compliance to cost modelling
  • A great communicator - persuasive when needed, but always listening
  • Must have minimum 2years working with chemicals and/or dangerous goods
