This position reports to the Head of Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals - APeC. The candidate should have bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceuticals, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering or other relevant field with 5-7 years of experience. A Masters or Post doctorate degree in Pharmaceutics or Biotechnology along with 4-5 years of experience in the classical pharmaceutics or biologics manufacturing or techno commercial role in excipient industry.

The Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals group is a part of Merck Life Science Business that combines strong commercial mindset with deep technical and application expertise to Merck’s customers developing or manufacturing pharmaceutical as well as biopharmaceutical drug products. The Technical Application Expert (TAE) role with up to 5-7 years of industrial experience will be part of the Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals team covering Japan based out of Tokyo, Japan.

Success in this role is measured not only by technical excellence and customer support, but also by the ability to create demand, enable sales success, contribute to revenue-generating opportunities at customer sites across Japan. This is a rewarding role for an experienced and confident individual with an interest in applied, techno-commercial Pharma & Biopharma formulation development.

Your Role:

This role of Technical Application Expert (TAE) serves as the primary technical consultant to customers and internal stakeholders, the incumbent is also expected to work closely with Sales to proactively identify, qualify, shape, and advance business opportunities. The role requires translating customer needs and technical challenges into value-based solutions, developing strong technical relationships with key accounts, influencing specification and product selection decisions, and supporting the progression of opportunities through the sales pipeline to drive business growth.

1. Represent Merck’s Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals expertise through customer-facing interactions, providing technical guidance, application support, and solution-based recommendations while actively supporting the progression of commercial opportunities
2. Translate customer challenges into application-based solutions, provide technical support and consultation, and identify opportunities to expand product adoption within strategic and key accounts.
3. Work closely with Sales to identify, shape, and progress commercial opportunities, supporting pre-sales activities, customer engagement, and the promotion of Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals products, solutions, and capabilities
4. Partner with Sales to qualify and advance high-value opportunities, driving Competition Conversion, New Product Introduction, Product Adoption, and Application Based Selling initiatives.
5. Identify customer needs and provide technical guidance to ensure effective product application within regulatory requirements.
6. Serve as a hybrid Technical Application Expert (TAE), leveraging deep expertise in Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals to provide technical leadership and collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Product Management, R&D, Technical Consultants, and Strategy teams to develop customer-centric solutions, enable value selling, and drive sustainable business growth in Japan.
7. Leverage market knowledge, scientific expertise, and customer insights to support opportunity identification, development, and commercialization, while building strong technical relationships across large and small molecule accounts in Japan.
8. Drive business growth by identifying customer needs and strategic opportunities aligned with regional goals.
9. Assess and prioritize customer projects through effective evaluation of technical and commercial requirements.
10. Support the full opportunity lifecycle, from prospecting and solution development to customer adoption.
11. Drive the adoption and growth of Excipients & Biopharma Chemicals by supporting new product launches, customer engagement, and technical value selling
12. Capture customer insights, market feedback, and commercial learnings, and communicate them to leadership, business, and strategy teams to support best practices, identify gaps, and strengthen future growth initiatives
13. Gather and share market, customer, and competitor insights to support business strategy and product development.
14. Maintain strong product and application knowledge through continuous learning and knowledge-sharing programs.
15. Build strong relationships with key customers, industry experts, and opinion leaders to strengthen Merck’s market presence and technical leadership
