Job Description

Imagine having the power to stress-test an entire power grid against a hurricane or thunderstorm before the clouds even gather. That is the reality we are creating at Neara.

We use advanced machine learning to create engineering-grade, physics enabled digital twins of electricity grids across four continents, this helps asset owners understand their biggest challenges and bring the most viable solutions to life across millions of kilometres of infrastructure.

By simulating extreme weather and structural stress at a network-wide scale, we empower the world’s largest utilities to pinpoint risks, optimise investments and build a more resilient global energy future.

Our team is a collection of brilliant minds who are fanatical about making a tangible difference in the real world, utilising AI and machine learning to accelerate everything from data classification to complex scenario analysis. We have built a special culture where innovation thrives because everyone owns the mission and we need smart, creative people to help us scale this impact to every corner of the globe.

We’re looking for experienced Tech Lead Managers to each lead one of Neara's core engineering teams. The teams we are hiring into span technical solutions, our platform and core integrations. Depending on your experience, we will align you with the team where you can have the most impact.

In our technical solutions teams, we are looking for leaders who are obsessed with delivering customer value and approach their work with a product-centred approach. You might be working directly with customers and are comfortable with rapid iteration. You are familiar with building products on top of a platform, whilst always seeking ways to contribute to enriching the platform itself.

In our experience platform and integrations teams we are looking for leaders with the technical depth to build robust features and capabilities that serve both internal & external customers. You have experience in creating platforms that are both visually appealing and work at scale. You may also have experience with integrating 3rd party systems to enable our users to seamlessly do their work across multiple tools.

All roles are people-first leadership positions with strong technical depth in software engineering. You’ll spend around 60% of your time leading teams and driving delivery, with the remaining 40% staying hands-on to guide system design and tackle complex technical challenges. As we grow, you may find you are operating in a more tech lead capacity as we build out the squad.

At the core of all of our teams is a customer centricity where we are fanatical about delivering tangible customer value, not just building technically complex products in isolation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Team Leadership & Delivery (Primary Focus)

  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team, supporting both technical development and career progression.

  • Own delivery for your team’s domain: Setting clear goals, defining milestones, and ensuring projects ship reliably and sustainably.

  • Own workflows and development practices that balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.

  • Create clarity in ambiguous problem spaces, helping teams break down complex technical challenges into achievable plans.

  • Foster strong collaboration with Product, Customer Success and Sales teams to ensure alignment and effective execution.

  • Partner closely with other Tech Lead Managers to raise the bar across engineering: influence best practices, tooling, and long-term platform direction, and help scale Neara's engineering culture as we grow.

Technical Leadership (Hands-on)

As a technical leader for an engineering group, your job is to build and lead the engineers behind a complex product, not to be the deepest expert in every part of it. Our stack spans a Dart-based client application, high-performance C++/Rust computation and simulation engines, and a Java backend for large-scale data services and APIs. Whether your own background is front end, backend, or systems, what matters is that you can earn credibility with engineers working in unfamiliar territory and know which technical trade-offs are worth your attention.

In this role, you’ll work hands-on across some of the following areas:

  • Stay hands-on where you multiply the team: contribute to system design and architectural decisions, and write and review production-quality code across performance-critical, data-intensive components. This isn't a hands-off role: you'll lead best by understanding the substance.

  • Own the technical core of your team: Balance what lives in our core engineering platform versus the application layer, so that solutions stay performant, flexible and maintainable; whilst continuing to build out our platform.

  • Work with complex, large-scale data: shape the ingestion and data structures that synthesise disparate sources (GIS, LiDAR, asset condition, historical failures) with a rich geospatial library, across very large networks.

  • Write and review production-quality code to support engineering-grade models, simulation engines, and 3D visualisations.

WHO YOU ARE

  • A technical people-leader who's owned delivery end to end: comfortable operating across engineering and product, accountable for outcomes not just outputs, and experience leading, mentoring, and growing engineers at multiple levels.

  • You get up to speed fast in unfamiliar territory: you've walked into a technical area you didn't already know, built context without hand-holding, found the heart of the problem, and delivered. This aptitude matters most to us.

  • Product sense, and a strong partner to Product: you keep the team focused on customer outcomes, and stay close to what utilities actually face - bringing an engineering perspective to hard, open-ended problems rather than waiting to be handed them.

  • You plan a route, then adapt as you learn: you've delivered ambitious, complex projects incrementally - shipping real progress along the way and changing course on evidence rather than clinging to the original plan.

  • Deep technical credibility: a strong track record of architecting and shipping complex, production-grade systems, with the judgement to go deep and make sound trade-offs without "out-experting" the specialists.

  • Formal grounding: a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • No-ego, outcome-oriented, and detail-obsessed: our work influences large-scale investment decisions, so we deliver polished, pristine outcomes, and we always have each other's backs.

Nice to have

  • Experience leading software teams on financial, investment, statistical modelling or other analysis-heavy, regulated products.

  • Exposure to geospatial systems, utilities, energy, simulation, or physics-based platforms; and strong mathematical reasoning or a mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering background. Extra bonus points if you have been building software that models the real world we live in.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Competitive salary & meaningful ESOP

  • Fully flexible working arrangements with a well-stocked office in Redfern

  • Regular office events

  • The real benefit is working on a genuinely complex, innovative and industry-leading product, making a genuine difference in the world around us.

Neara

About Neara

Neara is the first physics-enabled digital twin that combines engineering-grade analysis at the individual asset level with network-wide scale. It goes beyond visualization, capturing real-world spatial relationships — and how they change in any condition — that are essential to answering any ‘what-if’ question about your network:

• Between assets and their surroundings — in a >50 mph SW wind scenario, where will assets breach safe clearance thresholds?

• Between assets themselves — if one pole fails, which other ones will go with it?

• Across layers of workflows — if a tower gets moved inland, how will vegetation encroachment zones shift?

It applies the same physics-verified rigor used in engineering design to the full set of critical infrastructure challenges — from asset management and wildfire mitigation to resiliency and reliability, and design and construction. It connects the granular perspective engineers need to maintain a structurally sound, safe system with the network-wide view leaders need to improve reliability and efficiency. With Neara, daily realities upgrade from:

• Chasing risks by problem area to prioritizing context-agnostic risks by total network impact

• Costly and inefficient manual processes to precise, automated workflows

• Messy, anecdotal, project justification to easy-to-audit business cases that hold up from the field to the boardroom and courtroom

Every analysis, from a single pole’s loading to a proposed new transmission route, is grounded in the same structural ground truth so infrastructure owners can prioritize and validate network investment to maximize impact and capital efficiency in every context on every timescale.

Trusted by global utilities including Southern California Edison, CenterPoint Energy, HEDNO, and ESB, Neara has modeled millions of assets across four continents — reducing key processes from years to hours, restoring service >3× faster, and saving tens of millions in annual costs.
