About the Role
Applied Materials’ Computing Delivery Engineering team is responsible for delivering and maintaining the compute infrastructure that powers advanced semiconductor inspection and manufacturing systems. We are seeking a Senior Computing Infrastructure Engineer to lead the end-to-end ownership of this computing platform—from architecture and automation to validation, security hardening, and operational excellence.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with software architects and engineering teams to transform innovative product concepts into scalable, repeatable, and production-ready computing environments. As the highest level of technical escalation (Tier 4), you will play a critical role in ensuring platform reliability, performance, and supportability across customer deployments worldwide.
Key Responsibilities:
Computing Platform Design & Engineering (60%)
Architect and develop end-to-end computing platforms for next-generation inspection products, translating software requirements into infrastructure solutions spanning compute, storage, networking, security, operating systems, virtualization, and container technologies.
Build and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) frameworks using tools such as Ansible, Bash, and Python to automate provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management of Linux-based environments.
Optimize system performance across CPU, memory, storage, I/O, and network layers to support demanding, data-intensive workloads.
Create detailed architecture documentation, deployment procedures, and operational guides to ensure consistent system replication and deployment across manufacturing environments.
Establish scalable, reliable, and maintainable infrastructure standards that support product growth and operational efficiency.
Validation & Quality Assurance (20%)
Develop comprehensive validation strategies and test plans covering all infrastructure layers, including operating systems, virtualization platforms, networking, storage, security controls, and containerized environments.
Define release readiness criteria and validation checkpoints before systems are approved for manufacturing or customer deployment.
Design automated verification frameworks that ensure infrastructure configurations remain accurate, compliant, and consistent across large-scale deployments.
Drive quality and reliability initiatives through rigorous testing and continuous improvement practices.
Tier-4 Support & Platform Hardening (20%)
Serve as the highest technical escalation point (Tier 4) for production systems deployed in customer semiconductor fabrication facilities, including highly secure and air-gapped environments.
Lead complex troubleshooting and root-cause investigations across the complete technology stack, including networking, firewalls, virtualization, storage, operating systems, and applications.
Incorporate lessons learned from operational issues into platform architecture, automation, and deployment processes.
Continuously strengthen platform security, resiliency, and maintainability to meet demanding production requirements.
Manage and enhance R&D laboratory environments that mirror production systems for development, testing, and qualification purposes.
Required Skills & Experience:
We are looking for a hands-on infrastructure engineer with strong experience designing, deploying, and operating production-grade enterprise platforms.
Linux Administration (Required)
Extensive experience managing Linux environments, including Ubuntu and RHEL-based distributions.
Strong understanding of package management, system services, user and permission management, NFS, and Linux security controls.
Deep knowledge of Linux networking, filesystem architecture, system performance, and access control mechanisms such as SELinux, AppArmor, and firewall technologies.
Virtualization & Hypervisors
Practical experience administering VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or similar virtualization platforms.
Expertise in virtual machine lifecycle management, resource allocation, and virtual networking.
Storage Technologies
Experience with enterprise storage solutions, including SAN, NAS, iSCSI, NFS, RAID, and distributed storage platforms.
Strong understanding of storage performance tuning and capacity management.
Networking
Hands-on experience configuring enterprise networking infrastructure, including VLANs, trunking, link aggregation, and switch management.
Strong troubleshooting skills across Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking environments.
Experience using network analysis tools such as Wireshark to diagnose and resolve complex connectivity issues.
Security & Firewall Management
Experience implementing and maintaining firewall policies and security controls.
Knowledge of network segmentation, access control, and appliance-based firewall solutions.
Containers & Kubernetes
Experience building, managing, and deploying containerized applications using Docker, Podman, or equivalent technologies.
Hands-on administration of Kubernetes clusters and deployment of workloads using Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, and related resources.
Automation & Infrastructure as Code
Advanced proficiency in Ansible, Bash, and/or Python for infrastructure automation.
Strong Infrastructure-as-Code practices with emphasis on version control, automation, consistency, repeatability, and code review processes.
Experience automating platform deployment, configuration management, and compliance validation.
Communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within global engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing, operating, or supporting systems in air-gapped or highly secure environments.
Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing, industrial automation, embedded systems, or hardware-integrated software platforms.
Familiarity with CI/CD technologies for on-premises environments, including Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.
Experience with observability and monitoring solutions such as Grafana, Prometheus, ELK Stack, and performance analysis tools like iperf.
