About You

You are a passionate and technically strong leader with expertise in climate action, decarbonization, and sustainable mining practices. You bring a deep understanding of mining and processing operations, greenhouse gas emissions management, energy transition technologies, and the risks and opportunities associated with the low-carbon economy.

You thrive in collaborative, cross-functional environments and have demonstrated success influencing stakeholders, managing complex initiatives, and translating strategic sustainability objectives into practical, measurable outcomes. You are comfortable working across operations, technical teams, and corporate functions to drive decarbonization initiatives that support business performance and sustainability commitments.

You have experience developing and implementing decarbonization strategies, evaluating emissions reduction opportunities, and supporting climate-related governance, reporting, and risk management activities. You understand how to integrate climate considerations into business planning, capital projects, procurement, and operational decision-making while balancing technical, financial, and organizational priorities.

You are an effective communicator and relationship builder who can engage with leaders, operational teams, customers, investors, regulators, and industry partners. You are motivated by continuous improvement, innovation, and the opportunity to help accelerate Vale Base Metals' journey toward a lower-carbon future while advancing the company's sustainability and ESG objectives.

In this role, you will:

Decarbonization Strategy & Implementation

  • Support the development, refinement, and execution of Vale Base Metals' decarbonization roadmap and project portfolio.
  • Partner with operational sites, technical teams, and corporate functions to identify, evaluate, and prioritize emissions reduction opportunities.
  • Support the development of Marginal Abatement Cost (MAC) curves and decarbonization action plans for operating sites.
  • Monitor emerging energy transition technologies, regulatory developments, market trends, and industry best practices.

Climate Policy, Governance & Risk Management

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of climate-related policies, standards, and guidance.
  • Support integration of climate considerations into business decision-making processes, capital allocation, budgeting, and project evaluation.
  • Assist in climate risk assessments, scenario analysis, assurance activities, and governance routines across the business.
  • Help ensure alignment with corporate sustainability commitments and climate objectives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Procurement, Finance, Technology, Marketing, and Operations teams to advance low-carbon initiatives.
  • Support customer, investor, regulator, and government inquiries related to decarbonization and climate performance.
  • Facilitate collaboration across global operations to accelerate implementation of low-carbon projects and practices.

Performance Monitoring & Reporting

  • Support internal and external climate reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to greenhouse gas inventories, carbon footprint assessments, and product carbon intensity initiatives.
  • Develop performance metrics and reporting tools to track progress against climate commitments and decarbonization targets.

Low Carbon Centre of Excellence

  • Share best practices and lessons learned across global operations.
  • Prepare executive presentations and facilitate discussions with leadership teams.
  • Participate in industry forums and collaborative initiatives focused on decarbonization, climate change, and sustainable mining.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, Energy, Mining, Metallurgy, or related discipline.
  • Master's degree or Ph.D are considered a strong asset.
  • Professional designation (e.g., P.Eng.) is an asset.

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in decarbonization, climate change, sustainability, mining, energy, engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience leading complex technical initiatives and cross-functional programs within large organizations.
  • Experience working with environmental, climate, or ESG frameworks and reporting requirements is preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of mining and mineral processing technologies, particularly within nickel, copper, and other base metals.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions sources, climate technologies, and decarbonization strategies.
  • Project and program management expertise, including financial and carbon performance metrics.
  • Strong financial literacy and business acumen.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, networking, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Understanding of climate-related disclosure standards, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Strong planning, facilitation, leadership, and change management capabilities.
  • Fluent in English. Additional languages are considered an asset.
