As a leader, you will support Advanced Social Workers, Experienced Social Workers, and Family Support Practitioners, helping them provide tailored support through assessments and plans under the Care Act. You will guide the team to creatively use resources, including technology and community assets, to enable young people to live independently.

In this vital role, you will lead and manage the performance of a team of social workers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, reflection, and practice excellence. As a true team player, you will build strong, cohesive relationships across children’s and adults' services to deliver holistic, positive outcomes that champion personalisation, choice, and control.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and inspire a team of social workers, cultivating a reflective practice environment and managing risk and performance effectively.
  • Introduce, embed, and continually improve high-quality social work standards consistent with established models of good practice.
  • Ensure staff effectively support young people (aged 14–25) through the transition process, maximizing choice and independence.
  • Build and maintain strong partnership working with key stakeholders across Health, Social Care, and Education.
  • Provide expert professional advice to staff, colleagues, and partners, working closely with SEND, the Leaving Care Team, and the Children with Disabilities Service to deliver robust Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Work collaboratively with the Service Manager, council colleagues, and external professionals to drive cultural and behavioural changes, ensuring services are delivered at the right time, in the right place.
  • Oversee professional standards and ensure strict compliance with all relevant legislation, statutory guidance, and health and social care transformation agendas.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of the service, sharing best practices across integrated care networks, hospital teams, and the voluntary sector.

What We Are Looking For (About You):

  • A qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
  • A proven track record of managing or supervising staff within children's, adults', or transitions services.
  • A natural team player with exceptional relationship-building and multi-agency partnership skills.
  • High motivation and be a flexible individual with a proven track record of supporting and leading a team.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of current legislation and its application in a social care setting.
  • Passion about ensuring a smooth and timely transition for young people.
  • Applied knowledge of The Care Act and The Mental Capacity Act, with experience in complex safeguarding and professional judgement.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to provide professional, reflective supervision, guidance, and advice to front line supervisors, social workers, and family support workers.
  • Deep knowledge of relevant statutory frameworks, including the Care Act, Children Act, and SEND legislation.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire staff, manage performance, and lead through cultural change.

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary package (£57,150 - £59,298).
  • A supportive, collaborative leadership network and regular professional development.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including a 36-hour week and hybrid working (2 days WFH).

About Croydon Council

We provide a large number of services for local people, businesses and visitors to the borough, including services for children and adults, and environmental, cultural, sports, housing, planning and benefits services.

The borough is split into 24 electoral wards, and local elections are held every four years.

With a workforce of approximately 3,300 staff, including teachers in schools, Croydon Council is the largest employer in the borough. Spending over £900 million per year, the council makes a significant contribution to the local economy.

The council comprises three main political functions, the Executive (Leader and Cabinet), Committees, and Scrutiny.

The Leader and Cabinet are responsible and accountable for shaping policies and plans and recommending them to the council for approval. Cabinet also gives direction to departmental directors on the way services are managed and the budgets allocated to them.

Six non-executive committees take decisions relating to planning, licensing, standards of behaviour and conduct for members and officers, staffing issues, tenders, property transactions, liaison with local utility companies and internal audit.

Scrutiny holds the council executive functions to account. Examining aspects of council performance, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee also increasingly involves other local agencies which contribute to the economic, social and environmental well-being of the local population.
