About the opportunity
The Teaching Laboratory Technician provides hands-on support for the delivery and overall management of laboratory practicals and related experiments. You will help ensure the effective and safe operation of teaching laboratory spaces, provide day-to-day technical and operational support, and assist with the planning and preparation of practical classes and training.
During semester, some early starts and later finishes will be required to support the preparation and pack-up of practical classes. Working closely with the Laboratory Manager and Principal Laboratory Manager, you will be an integral member of the IMAS Operations team, supporting teaching activities across the Salamanca and Taroona facilities.
What you’ll do:
- Help manage and organise the teaching laboratories across Salamanca and Taroona to accommodate a wide range of activities which will overlap from week to week and be ever changing.
- Communicate with the unit coordinators and demonstrators about their needs for each specific practical to provide technical support and lead the preparation.
- Set up and pack up equipment before and after laboratory practicals.
- Help with the running of teaching related experiments, such as culture of algae and shellfish, as well as limited field work.
- Assist with the making of custom equipment if required.
- Provide feedback to the Laboratory Manager regarding the safety of the practicals if required
What we’re looking for:
- Completion of a Science Degree preferably marine.
- Significant experience in providing technical laboratory support of marine research infrastructure.
- Previous laboratory experience and working with students in a lab environment.
- Ability to work well with a range of people under different circumstances, in a professional yet friendly and approachable manner.
- Experience in working to firm timelines and demonstrated ability to adapt to changing requirements and priorities.
- Work, Health and Safety (WHS) knowledge and safe work systems management, including knowledge of chemical and laboratory hazards.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse and solve complex technical and non-technical problems and to adapt rapidly to changing priorities and tasks.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of people and organisations and negotiate with senior representatives from internal and external organisations.
- High level organisational skills and a demonstrated capacity to act independently within established guidelines, using discretion and sound judgement.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105,665 comprising base salary within the range of $80,869 to $90,312 plus 17% superannuation.
