Teacher of Visual Impairment

Position: 10 month, Full time

Reports to: Coordinator of Specialized Programs, EC Director

Qualifications

  • North Carolina licensure or certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
  • Special Education background is preferred
  • Experience working with visually impaired students, preferably in an educational setting
  • Strong knowledge of adaptive techniques, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for students with visual impairments
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with students, parents, educators, and colleagues

Responsibilities

  • Duties: Provide Visual Impairment (VI) Services as described by DPI Guidelines for Exceptional Children.
  • As a TVI, you will play a vital role in providing specialized support to a visually impaired student, ensuring they have equal access to education and a positive learning experience
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the visual needs and learning preferences of the student including generating professional evaluation reports.
  • Develop and implement individualized educational plans that address the unique needs and goals of the student
  • Provide direct instruction and support to the visually impaired student, utilizing appropriate adaptive techniques and tools
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure the student's needs are met effectively
  • Provide guidance and support to other school staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment with access to instruction.
  • Adapt and modify educational materials to accommodate the student's visual impairment
  • Work in collaboration with other staff members to ensure the student's success.
  • Understanding of Regular Curriculum and Extended Content Curriculum, Grades K-12
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Monitor and document the student's progress, adjusting strategies as needed
  • Provide progress reports as required by the IEP
  • Document services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instruction.
  • Maintain VI equipment, provide inventory updates, and ensure that broken devices are repaired.
  • Ability to travel between school locations.
  • Physical requirement: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
