Job Description

For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness.
Early Childhood Development Centers provide free Head Start services to low-income families at no cost to the children ages 3 to 5 years. The high-quality services are offered in the center-based program settings available for the Brooklyn and Queens Communities.
Through the Montessori approach, the centers ensure children are ready for school by providing a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social, emotional, language-literacy, and physical development. The Head Start Program strives to actively engage parents, recognizing family participation throughout the program, as a key to a child’s robust development as well as to offer the learning experiences tailored to the changing needs and abilities of children.
STATEMENT OF THE JOB
Teacher will supervise the teaching team in planning and executing age and developmentally appropriate activities reflecting the Montessori curriculum. The candidate will be responsible to supervise the implementation of activities that will promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative development of children. Teacher will elicit input from Assistant Teacher and Teachers-Aide to complete written observations, progress reports, outcomes reporting, CROWD, and other documents relevant to the tracking of children’s progress. The candidate will help Assistant Program Manager to facilitate parent involvement in all aspects of the program and promote positive growth and professional development. The candidate will adhere to policies and procedures established by CCNS, ACS, DOH, DOE, and CACFP and comply with procedural norms and standards of attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality relevant to HIPAA.
• Supervises teaching team’s work to ensure a learning environment based on the Montessori approach that helps the children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively.
• Supervises the implementation of activities that will promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative development of children.
• Assumes responsibility for the operation of the classroom thus holding Assistant Teacher and Teachers-Aide accountable to their duties and responsibilities.
• Shares information regarding children and the program with parents via daily contact and informal/formal interfacings, home visits, newsletters, etc.
• Encourages parents in their role as their children’s primary teachers by acting as resource person (i.e.: disseminating information, actively listening to parents, offering suggestions, etc.).
• Elicits input from the Assistant Teacher and Teachers-Aide to complete written observations, progress reports, outcomes reporting, CROWD, and other documents relevant to the tracking of children’s progress.
• Utilizes information obtained via observations, conferences, tracking, etc. to design developmentally appropriate and individualized lesson plans.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education or related filed to Early Childhood Education (Elementary Education, Nursery to 6th Grade Elementary Education, Special Education, Child Development, Students with Disabilities Birth to 2nd Grade) Plus a Study Plan for meeting Bachelors Degree requirement within 7 years.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field (Elementary Education, Nursery to 6th Grade Elementary Education, Special Education, Child Development, Students with Disabilities Birth to 2nd Grade; Child Psychology, Child Development, General Education accompanied by 12 credits specific to Early Childhood Education)
• Master’s Degree in in Early Childhood Education or related field to Early Childhood Education (Elementary Education, Nursery to 6th Grade Elementary Education, Special Education, Child Development, Students with Disabilities Birth to 2nd Grade; Child Psychology, Child Development, General Education accompanied by 12 credits specific to Early Childhood Education
• N.Y.S. Initial/Professional Certification - Nursey to 6th grade, Birth to 2nd Grade, pre-k to 6th Grade, student with disabilities - birth to 2nd grade, and Special education in Nursery or Kindergarten to 12th grade preferred.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in a pre-school classroom required.
• 2 years of teaching experience in a pre-school classroom environment preferred.
• If not already Montessori trained, must commit to enroll in the Agency’s Montessori training program within the first year of hire.
• Bilingual Spanish/English; Russian/English; Chinese/English; Korean/English; English/Creole speaking preferred.
• Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
