Job Description

Southwestern University invites applications for the position of part-time Teacher Certification Coordinator, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (AVPAA). This is a 11-month, in-person, 20 hours per week position without benefits. In collaboration with the Education Department Chair, this position provides coordination for the Southwestern University Teacher Certification Program (TCP) and provides support for the Education Department faculty in their work preparing students for teacher certification.

Primary responsibilities include:

All certification compliance activities including, but not limited to: keeping internal records/documentation for students seeking certification; evaluation of transcripts; processing student applications to the TCP and evaluating student eligibility; setting up student TEAL accounts; planning and leading required orientations; managing, administering, and scoring practice tests for admitted students; tracking completion of required trainings; scheduling and participating in TCP admission interviews; approving certification exam eligibility and recommending program completers to Texas Education Agency (TEA) for state certification

Preparing and submitting required state and federal reports, in collaboration with the department chair

Serving as primary department liaison to TEA and State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)

Representing Southwestern University at assigned professional orientations, meetings and conferences

With the guidance of the AVPAA, meeting regularly with department chair to effectively and efficiently communicate status of job expectations

  • Planning and implementing Education Department programs/events related to preparing students for teacher certification (i.e. Semester of Support, Majoring in Education Information Sessions and Orientations, Advisory Committee Meetings, etc.)

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field

Excellent computer skills, including significant experience with databases, Excel spreadsheets, and Google Drive tools and documents

Excellent time management, prioritization, and organizational skills

Demonstrated professional manner with all constituencies, including strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, listening)

Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team

Evidence of ability to self-initiate and anticipate the needs of constituents

Ability to occasionally travel within Texas to attend orientations, meetings, and conferences

Strongly preferred qualifications:

Texas Teacher’s Certificate

  • At least three years teaching experience
