The 1:1 Teacher Assistant provides individualized, in-class and school-day support to a student with disabilities to promote access, engagement, independence, and progress toward IEP goals. The role partners closely with the teacher, therapists, and the family to implement accommodations, collect data, and ensure safety across settings.

Job Responsibilities:

Instructional & IEP Support

  • Implement teacher-designed lessons, accommodations, and modifications; pre-teach/re-teach skills.
  • Prepare/adapt materials (visuals, manipulatives, AAC support, task analysis).
  • Collect daily progress data on IEP/behavior goals, report observations to the teacher.

Behavior & Social-Emotional Support

  • Follow Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIPs); use proactive strategies, reinforcement, and de-escalation.
  • Coach social skills, communication, and self-regulation; supervise transitions and unstructured times.

Access, Health, and Personal Care (as needed and trained)

  • Support mobility, positioning, and safe transfers; push wheelchair/walker as needed.
  • Assist with feeding, toileting, hygiene, and medical protocols per plan.
  • Monitor for sensory/health needs; communicate concerns immediately.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Coordinate daily with classroom teachers and therapists (OT/PT/SLP)
  • Maintain professional, confidential communication with families (per teacher/admin guidance).

Safety & Supervision

  • Maintain constant line-of-sight supervision; enforce safety plans in classroom, cafeteria, playground and field trips.
  • Follow school emergency procedures and crisis prevention protocols.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Protect student confidentiality (FERPA).
  • Complete required logs, incident forms, and data sheets accurately and on time.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience:

  • 1 year as a teacher assistant working with students with disabilities.
  • Proficient with basic technology (Chromebook/iPad, learning apps); ability to learn assistive technology/AAC.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional judgment
