Job Description
The Settlement Fund Manager is a position within the Settlement Fund Department. The Settlement Fund Manager is responsible for overseeing the preparation of and the review of fund accounting, quarterly estimated taxes, and tax returns for Qualified Settlement Funds (“QSFs”), while managing client engagements and supervising team members. The Settlement Fund Department is a nationally recognized team of professionals providing QSF tax compliance, consulting, advocacy, advisory and training. The Settlement Fund Manager works with partners to build and maintain relationships with administrators, law firms, lawyers, administrative agencies, courts, receivers, trustees and other industry leaders to provide tax support and other services. Among other important engagements, the Settlement Fund Department manages the firm’s role as Tax Administrator for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
*While the Settlement Fund Department works in collaboration with the Tax Department, the Settlement Fund Manager is a dedicated position within the Settlement Fund Department and does not work on general tax engagements for the Tax Department.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise, mentor, and develop Associates and Senior Associates.
- Review staff work product and provide coaching and performance feedback.
- Manage team workflow, resource allocation, and engagement staffing.
- Assist with staff training and professional development initiatives.
- Monitor engagement workflow and project deadlines.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manage tax-related client issues, research projects, and transactions.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients and external stakeholders.
- Communicate and collaborate directly with clients, colleagues, attorneys, administrators, and firm leadership regarding various tax matters.
- Review and prepare as needed tax compliance filings for QSFs.
- Review and oversee the preparation of income tax returns for QSFs.
- Review and prepare as needed quarterly tax estimates, tax and fee reserves, consolidated fund accounting reports (CFARs), and other required reports.
- Analyze financial records (e.g., bank statements) and governing documents (settlements, judgments, orders, etc.) to determine QSF tax compliance obligations.
- Ensure projects are completed timely and within scope, maintaining high-quality standards.
- Provide technical guidance and training for staff.
- Research complex tax issues and provide practical recommendations.
- Manage multiple engagements, budgets, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Review work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates for accuracy and completeness.
- Uphold the Settlement Fund Department’s prestigious reputation by assisting Partners and Senior Managers with practice development and maintaining client relationships.
- Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Education/Training Responsibilities:
- Adhere to the requirements for continuing education as outlined in the Quality Control Manual.
- Complete all assigned training courses within the stated timelines.
- Support and lead internal training initiatives as appropriate.
Education and Experience:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field.
- Minimum of 5+ years of tax experience.
- Minimum of 5+ years of tax experience.
Preferred:
- Experience with Qualified Settlement Funds (QSFs).
- Competence with UltraTax tax preparation software.
- CPA and/or EA certification.
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation or JD or LL.M. in Taxation.
- Prior supervisory experience.
