This role is heavily focused on U.S. and state income tax compliance across a complex organizational and tax structure that includes C Corporations, S Corporations, and international reporting requirements. It requires a tax professional who thrives in a complex environment, enjoys identifying and solving challenging tax issues, and can effectively manage multiple projects, deadlines, and responsibilities simultaneously. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams throughout the organization, collaborate with external tax advisors, and partner with accounting and finance colleagues to identify, analyze, and resolve tax matters while ensuring timely and accurate reporting of business activities.

Reporting directly to the Corporate Tax Director and working closely with the Tax Manager – International Tax Compliance, this position offers the opportunity to develop broad technical expertise across multiple entity structures, jurisdictions, and business operations while supporting the tax compliance needs of a growing and dynamic organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation of the federal Form 1120 and 1120S income tax returns for large and complex organizational structure. This includes compiling trial balances, tax adjustments and eliminations entries for multiple federal and state tax reporting groups across all operations including timber, sawmill and sales operations.
  • Partner with accounting, finance, and operational personnel across multiple locations to gather information, analyze business transactions, and ensure appropriate tax treatment and reporting.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual tax provisions under ASC 740, including effective tax rates calculations, deferred tax assets/liabilities, and reconciliation of tax payable and receivable balances.
  • Prepare tax payment calculations and ensure timely remittance of federal, state, and local tax payments, including extensions and estimated tax payments, through effective management of compliance calendars and filing deadlines.
  • Research federal and state tax issues and assess the impact of legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Compile information for consolidated state tax apportionment workpapers and compute federal/state tax differences for multiple tax reporting groups.
  • Independently manage correspondence with federal and state tax authorities, including notices, examinations, overpayment claims, and refund inquiries.
  • Review work performed by Corporate Tax Accountant including GL reconciliations and tax depreciation reporting.
  • Coordinate with external tax consultants on the preparation and review of consolidated federal and state income tax returns.
  • Prepare tax analyses supporting projections, forecasts, legislative changes, business initiatives, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions.
  • Support sales tax, property tax, and other tax projects as needed

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Self-starter who takes ownership of responsibilities and follows through to completion.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with individuals across departments, locations, and external organizations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain tax concepts clearly and concisely and document conclusions.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Professional, accountable, and committed to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and confidentiality.

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance and/or Tax required
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant corporate income tax experience, particularly with larger, more complex, multi-level tax structures and large data sets
