We currently have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic person to join our Business Tax team under the Tax & Legal Service Line as a Manager This position will be based in our Blantyre office in Malawi, but the successful candidate can also be based in Lilongwe.

We are seeking a technically strong and client-focused Tax Manager to join our Business Tax practice. The successful candidate will manage a portfolio of tax compliance and advisory engagements, providing high-quality tax solutions to a diverse range of local and multinational clients. The role requires sound technical knowledge of corporate income taxation, deferred taxation and tax accounting, together with strong project management, client relationship management and leadership skills.

The Tax Manager will be responsible for managing multiple engagements, supervising engagement teams, ensuring technical excellence, and supporting the growth of the firm's tax practice through exceptional client service and business development.

The holder of this position will ensure that assignments are carried out to the highest standards in order to provide outstanding value to clients and the Firm; develop high-performing people and teams, leading and supporting them to make an impact that matters; and setting the direction to deliver exceptional client service.

What you will do

Client Service and Technical Delivery

  • Manage the delivery of corporate tax compliance and advisory engagements for a portfolio of clients across various industries.
  • Prepare and review corporate income tax computations, tax returns, deferred tax calculations and tax provisions.
  • Provide practical advice on corporate income tax, withholding taxes and other direct tax matters.
  • Advise clients on the application of Malawi tax legislation and relevant accounting standards affecting taxation.
  • Support clients in implementing tax-efficient business structures and managing tax risks.
  • Assist clients during tax audits, reviews and investigations, including preparing responses to tax authority queries.
  • Conduct tax health checks and identify opportunities to improve tax governance and compliance.
  • Research technical tax issues and prepare well-rereasoned technical opinions and client memoranda.
  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and communicate implications to clients and engagement teams.
  • Deliver robust Advisory Services

Support and deliver tax advisory projects in areas including:

  • Corporate tax planning
  • Tax compliance
  • Deferred tax and tax accounting (IAS 12)
  • Tax due diligence
  • Business and investment restructuring
  • Tax risk management
  • Transaction support
  • Cross-border tax matters
  • Tax incentives and exemptions
  • Tax governance and process improvement
  • Collaboration with Audit & Assurance, and Transfer Pricing and other specialist teams where required

Client Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with client management teams.
  • Serve as a trusted adviser by providing timely, practical and commercially focused tax advice.
  • Manage client expectations and ensure engagements are delivered within agreed timelines and budgets.
  • Identify opportunities to provide additional services that address client needs.
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations.

Engagement Management

  • Plan, coordinate and manage multiple engagements simultaneously.
  • Allocate work effectively across engagement teams.
  • Review work prepared by Assistant Managers, Senior Associates and Associates.
  • Ensure compliance with firm methodologies, quality standards and professional requirements.
  • Manage engagement budgets, billing and financial performance.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Supervise, coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Provide technical guidance and constructive feedback.
  • Support performance management and learning initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration, accountability and a culture of continuous improvement.

Business Development

  • Support the preparation of proposals, tenders and client presentations.
  • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships.
  • Participate in networking events and marketing initiatives.
  • Contribute to thought leadership through technical articles, presentations and client updates.

Risk Management and Quality

  • Ensure all engagements comply with professional standards, firm policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and manage engagement risks proactively.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation and work papers.
  • Uphold the highest standards of ethics, integrity and professional conduct.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation or a related field.

Professional qualification such as ACCA, CA, CPA or equivalent (or significant progress with the same).

Additional Information

Experience

Typically 5+ years of relevant tax experience, preferably within a professional services environment.

Experience managing corporate tax compliance and advisory engagements.

Experience supervising teams and reviewing technical work.

Exposure to multinational clients and complex tax matters is desirable.

Previous experience in a Big 4 or leading professional services firm is advantageous.
