The Tax Manager leads tax compliance and planning across MEW's multi-entity partnership structure of approximately 100 legal entities. This role manages the full tax compliance calendar — federal and state income tax, property tax, and sales and use tax — coordinates closely with external tax advisors, and supports review of fiduciary returns for related trusts. The role also supports tax planning for the renewable energy credits and incentives central to MEW's business, including the Section 48 Investment Tax Credit and the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit, and reports directly to the Chief Accounting Officer.
Responsibilities
• Manage federal and state income tax compliance across a multi-entity structure (~100 legal entities), predominantly partnerships and disregarded entities, including review of Forms 1065, K-1s, and state filings prepared by external advisors.
• Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for external tax advisors, managing deliverables, timelines, and open technical questions.
• Support tax planning and compliance for renewable energy tax credits and incentives, including the Section 48 Investment Tax Credit (placed-in-service analysis and documentation) and the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit (registration, substantiation, and claims).
• Analyze partnership tax matters, including partner allocations, guaranteed payments under Section 707(c), basis tracking, and the tax treatment of preferred returns and distributions.
• Manage property tax compliance across the project portfolio, including filings, assessments, exemption opportunities, and appeals where appropriate.
• Manage sales and use tax compliance, including registrations, filings, exemption certificates, and taxability analysis for equipment purchases and construction activity.
• Support review of fiduciary income tax returns (Form 1041) for related trusts, coordinating with external preparers and trustees.
• Maintain the tax compliance calendar and ensure timely filings, extensions, and estimated payments across all entities and jurisdictions.
• Review and reconcile tax provisions and book-to-tax differences with the financial reporting team.
• Support entity formation, restructuring, and transaction planning from a tax perspective, including coordination with outside counsel.
• Respond to federal and state tax notices and manage examinations as they arise.
• Monitor federal and state tax legislation affecting renewable energy and partnership taxation, and brief leadership on impacts.
• Build internal tax processes and documentation that reduce reliance on manual work and institutional knowledge.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation.
• 5+ years of tax experience with significant partnership taxation exposure (Form 1065, K-1s, allocations).
• Strong working knowledge of Subchapter K, including guaranteed payments, partner allocations, and basis.
• Experience managing relationships with external tax advisors and coordinating multi-entity compliance.
• Strong research and writing skills, including the ability to document technical tax positions.
Preferred Qualifications
• Active CPA license (or licensed attorney with LL.M. in Taxation).
• Public accounting background (Big 4 or large regional firm) in a partnership or pass-through practice.
• Experience with property tax and sales and use tax compliance, particularly in California.
• Experience with fiduciary income tax returns (Form 1041) and trust structures.
• Experience with renewable energy tax credits (Section 48 ITC, Section 45Z, or similar) and related compliance.
• Familiarity with California tax compliance and credits, and with environmental credit programs such as LCFS and RINs.
• Experience in renewable energy, real estate, or private equity fund structures.
• Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems.
