The Tax Director reports to the Vice President of Tax and serves as a senior technical leader within the tax department. This role directs federal and multistate income tax compliance, ASC 740 provision, partnership tax, and indirect tax functions for a consolidated group of 13 entities under a partnership parent. The Tax Director leads tax planning strategy, manages tax controversy matters, and drives process improvements across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Direct timely filing of federal and multistate consolidated and separate corporate income tax returns, partnership returns (Form 1065, Schedules K-1
  • Lead quarterly and annual income tax provisions under ASC 740, including current and deferred tax calculations, ETR analysis, rate reconciliations, return-to-provision adjustments, valuation allowance assessments, and tax footnote preparation for audited financial statements.
  • Oversee indirect tax compliance (sales/use tax, gross receipts taxes, property tax) across multiple jurisdictions, monitor nexus exposure, and direct the response to federal and state tax notices, audits, and information document requests.
  • Lead tax planning projects and technical research, including memoranda on federal and state matters, legislative change impact analysis, transaction structuring, and specialized calculations (Section 163(j), Section 174, debt modifications, acquisition-related work).
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with accounting, finance, legal, treasury, and external advisors; serve as primary liaison with the external audit firm and outside counsel on provision review and controversy matters; build, supervise, and develop the tax team.

Qualifications

  • Deep technical knowledge of ASC 740, consolidated return regulations, multistate income tax compliance, indirect taxes, and partnership taxation.
  • Strong experience managing tax audits, controversy matters, and relationships with federal and state taxing authorities and outside counsel.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and tax compliance software (CCH Axcess preferred), with comfort handling large data sets, complex workpapers, and financial modeling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical memoranda, correspond with taxing authorities, and present to senior leadership.
  • Proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop tax professionals and lead cross-functional collaboration.

Education & Experience

  • 12+ years of progressive corporate income tax experience, with a strong mix of public accounting and in-house corporate tax leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • CPA required.

Preferred

  • Master's in Taxation or LLM in Taxation.
  • Healthcare, staffing, or private equity-backed company experience.
  • Experience with ERP system integration and tax technology process improvements

We believe in fair compensation for all of our people, which is why our pay structure takes into account the cost of labor across U.S. geographic markets. For this position, we offer a pay range of $146,200 -- $282,600 annually, with pay varying depending on work location and job-related factors such as knowledge, position level and experience. CHG Healthcare offers starting salaries for sales positions in the form of total target compensation (TTC = base + commission + bonus), which includes base pay, commission, and bonuses. Sales positions receive short-term incentives through commission plans and bonuses. On the other hand, non-sales positions have starting salaries that consist of a base salary and short-term incentives through various bonus plans, which are paid out monthly, quarterly, or annually.
