Hiring range for the Senior Tax Auditor position is $64,230.40 - $76,793.60. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 23.
*****Applicants who do not fully meet the requirements for a Senior Tax Auditor will be considered at a lower level and pay grade, which is a grade 20, as a Tax Auditor: $55,452.80 - $66,310.40.*****
Performs difficult professional work in the management of the Business Personal Property audit process. Serves as Economic Investment Administrator and lead for special tax department projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Personal Property Manager. Supervision will be exercised over Tax Auditor staff.
Supervision of desk and field audits; assists with contract tax audits including general coordination, review and guidance throughout the audit and appeal processes; administration of grants to include tracking of compliance, budgeting, and performing complex calculations based on interpretation of legal agreements; assists with assignments delegated to the Tax Auditor as needed; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

Comprehensive knowledge of business personal property principles, practices and procedures; of standard practices, procedures and equipment as applied to the maintenance of an accounting system; and of the State laws for the assessment of Business Personal Property;. Strong computer skills with the ability to create Pivot tables, Macros, and extensive automated spreadsheets in Excel; Working knowledge office equipment and computers and applicable software applications. Ability to analyze, interpret, and exercise professional judgement in the review of financial data, contracts and laws; to prepare financial analysis reports; to communicate ideas and arguments effectively, orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; and to attend work regularly.
Requires graduation from an appropriately accredited college or university with major course work in business accounting or related field and considerable experience involving tax auditing, accounting and financial systems. Prefer experience in property tax appraisal/auditing. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Possession of or the ability to obtain certification by North Carolina Department of Revenue as a Personal Property Appraiser within three years of employment. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) desirable. Requires occasional evening work for board meetings.
Requires Bachelor's Degree from an appropriately accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance or related field with coursework in accounting. Master’s degree preferred. Intermediate experience of three to five years with Accounting, Tax, Auditing, Assessment, Supervisory or Grant Administration in both Public, Private, or Governmental roles. Public accounting, property tax appraisal/auditing, and supervisory experience preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. NCDOR Personal Property and Real Property Appraiser designations are preferred but may be attained within the first two years.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the state of North Carolina. Requires occasional evening work for board meetings.
